DETROIT'S NEW CENTER area
badly needed a late-night watering hole
near to the theater district ... where the
crowds pouring out of the Fisher
Theater could have a place to unwind ...
The executive crowd and just plain
folks, too, including many moms, found
their way to Normandie, on Second and
Grand Blvd. ... lured by its fabled ham-
burgers, sandwiches and more substan-
tial dinners ... Dress ranged from casuals
to post-theater fancy dress ... come as
you'd like to be seen because one never
knew who would show up there.
WHEN LOTHROP BETWEEN
Second and Third, across from the
Fisher Building, was converted to a
parking lot, Fisher's 666 was mercifully
spared to live on ... Among other things,
666 kept a close eye on the Fisher
Theatre curtain times, both opening and
closing ... but was not confined to show-
times ... Lunch business was brisk, espe-
cially on Mother's day and there was
always a chance of spotting a familiar
face from the stage across the street or
the radio station 21 floors above it.

Mother's Day ... Don't forget ... Here
are a few Oldies but Goodies about
those grand gals.
A tramp walked up to a Jewish
mother one day, and said to her,
"Madam, I haven't eaten in three days."
"Force yourself," she said.
A Jewish gangster was dining at a
kosher restaurant on New York's
Lower East Side, when members of
the mob burst in and shot him full of
lead. He managed to stagger out of the
restaurant and stumbled up the street
to the tenement block where his
mother lived. Clutching his bleeding
