i Semitic writings of fellow Republi-
can Spiro Agnew, labeling the for-
rner vice president's charges
"wrong, _both substantively and
morally."
#3) When this man became pres-
ident, Jews still were not allowed
to serve as chaplains in the U.S.
Army (up to this point, all military
chaplains were Protestant). Then
the issue became a cause celebre
in the United States and was an
extremely sensitive matter while
debated in Congress. Finally, this
president intervened on behalf of
the Jewish community. Name him.
i #4) This president was the first to
I welcome a rabbi to the White
House.
#5) The first Jewish member of the
Supreme Court, Louis D. Brandeis,
was appointed (but only after an
extremely bitter struggle) by this
president.
I - #6) The Jewish National Fund
•I presented this man with a Bible
bearing the inscription, "To [the
president] ... In recognition of his
extraordinary qualities of humanity
and leadership and in apprecia-
tion of his steadfast pursuit of
peace and his championship of
American-Israel friendship."
#7) After visiting Yad Vashem,
this president called Israel's
memorial to victims of the Halo-
caust the most impressive sight he
had ever seen.
#8) This man was the first presi-
dent to accept a national petition
from the Jewish community.
#9) This curious figure is often
regarded one of the few presi-
dents who was less than sympa-
thetic to the Jewish community
(some even labeled him anti-Semit-
ic). At the same time, a leading
Jewish figure of the time, Simon
Wolf, wrote at length in support of
this president, saying that he did
more on "behalf of American citi-
zens of Jewish faith than all the
presidents prior thereto or since."
#10) Though Thomas Jefferson

and John Adams were the chief
architects behind the idea of sep-
aration of church and state, this
president also issued a historic
statement that affirmed the equal
right of all religions within the
United States.
#11) This president, who labeled
the Jews "the most glorious nation
that ever inhabited this earth,"
asserted that Hebraic studies
should be part of any classical
education. Soon before his death,
he bequeathed land for the estab-
lishment of a school where stu-
dents would learn Hebrew along-
side Latin and Greek.
#12) This colorful figure, whom
former British Prime Minister Arthur
James Balfour called "the greatest
moral force of the age," so
inspired American citizens that he
regularly received slabs of meat
cut in the shape of his profile, live
raccoons and snakes from
sideshows. He also was excep-
tionally well-loved in the Jewish
community because of his outspo-
ken condemnation of Jewish perse-
cution in Russia and Romania,
because he appointed the first
Jewish cabinet officer in American
history, and thanks to his decision
to donate part of his Nobel Prize
(which he received for helping
end the Russo-Japanese War) to
the National Jewish Welfare
Board. Who was he?
#13) Initially, this man had a
great deal of support from all eth-
nic groups, yet he lost much of
this in bids for reelection —
except among the Jewish commu-
nity, where he never received less
than 90 percent of the vote.
#14) Very soon after coming into
office, this president tripled the
amount of American financial aid
to Israel. Name him.
#15) This figure was the first who
used his political power as presi-
dent to help Jews outside the
country.
