aration of church and state, this
president also issued a historic
statement that affirmed the equal
right of all religions within the
United States.

the Jews "the most glorious nation
that ever inhabited this earth,"
asserted that Hebraic studies
should be part of any classical
education. Soon before his death,
he bequeathed land for the estab-
lishment of a school where stu-
dents would learn Hebrew along-
side Latin and Greek.

former British Prime Minister Arthur
James Balfour called "the greatest
moral force of the age," so
inspired American citizens that he
regularly received slabs of meat
cut in the shape of his profile, live
raccoons and snakes from

community because of his outspo-
ken condemnation of Jewish perse-
cution in Russia and Romania,
because he appointed the first
Jewish cabinet officer in American
history, and thanks to his decision
to donate part of his Nobel Prize
(which he received for helping
end the Russo-Japanese War) to
the National Jewish Welfare
Board. Who was he?
#13) Initially, this man had a
great deal of support from all eth-
nic groups, yet he lost much of
this in bids for reelection —
except among the Jewish commu-
nity, where he never received less
than 90 percent of the vote.
#14) Very soon after coming into
office, this president tripled the
amount of American financial aid
to Israel. Name him.

used his political power as presi-
dent to help Jews outside the
