From Matt Dubin
in Las Vegas ... "My
wife (Debbie
Dubin, formerly
Weinstein) and I an
former Detroiters
living in Las Vegas.
I'm 29 and have been here since April
1999, and my wife of one month is
26, and moved here in July 2000. We
were married at the Atheneum Hotel
in Detroit on Thanksgiving weekend.
Anyway, enough of the personal stuff
and on to why I'm sending this e-mail
"We get the Detroit Jewish News
delivered here (as I have in every state
I've lived in — Michigan, Illinois and
California.) I read your column in the
Dec. 22 edition about food service
and Jewish deli food in Las Vegas. I
agree with a lot of what you had to sa d
about the service (or sometimes lack
of) and difficulty in finding good deli
food. At least any that measure up to
that offered in Detroit.
"Although Tm not a restaurant critic
and admittedly sometimes prefer
quantity over quality, I believe we hav
found an excellent source of good
Jewish deli food in Las Vegas. The
only thing it is missing is Detroit rye
bread. The kind found at Stage, Deli
Unique, Bread Basket, etc.
"We live in Summerlin (about 20
minutes west of the Las Vegas Strip,)
the largest-growing master planned
community in the country. And, yes,
there is a sizable Jewish community
here and in other parts of the Las
Vegas valley.
"Near our home is a restaurant
called the Bagel Cafe. In fact, I believe
they are in the process of opening a
location on the east side of the valley
as well. We eat there about two or
three times a month. And the owner i:
ALWAYS there. He works the front
counter and dining area.
"The food, in our opinion, is as
good as any Jewish deli in Detroit.
Again, the only thing it's missing is th;
Detroit rye bread. The desserts are
amazing. All the Jewish pastries you
can imagine. And an incredible varier)
of bagels. It seems at least 20 kinds to
choose from.
"There is, however, one area when
I believe they outdo the Detroit deli
— matzah ball soup. Their matzah
ball soup includes not only a matzal-
ball and broth, but also chicken, car
rots and celery. And, a bagel with
butter/cream cheese automatically
comes with all soup and/or salad
orders. It does a small dinner busi-
