Anthony Quinn
loved Billy's guitar-
playing and
singing so much
that he had him
record three songs
for Quinn to take
back to Hollywood
with him ... "Fool That I Am,"
"Stranger in Town" and "I'm Falling
for You."
Bob Hope's favorite by Billy at
Giovanni's was his theme song,
"Thanks for the Memories" ... In
1949, while after-hours at Giovanni's,
Billy also played the London Chop
House, doing musical sessions during
normal evening times.
In the early '60s, Matt Michaels,
leader of the trio backing Barbra
Streisand at the Caucus Club, used to
bring her to the Grecian Gardens,
where Billy played after hours in its
back room ... He would come to their
table and sing together with Barbra ...
"Here's That Rainy Day," etc.
Also at the Grecian Gardens, Jimmy
Durante's favorite by Billy was "You're
Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You".
Then came Las Vegas in 1961 at the
Fremont Hotel, where the marquee
read, "The Jolly Jack Four" of which
Billy was a member of the all-Detroit
musical group ... Underneath the
name was that of a 16-year-old who
went on to become Mr. Las Vegas ...
Wayne Newton ... Years later, Billy was
playing parties for him and singing
one of his favorite songs by Billy, "I
Wish You Love."
Today, Billy Rose is at Excalibur in
Southfield with his quartet, Tuesday
through Thursday .. His first CD
recording, "We Live in a World"
($14.99) ... can be gotten from Billy at
Excalibur ... from Dearborn Music ...
or by calling him at (313) 584-1647.
CONGRATS ... to Hy Vogel ...
noted former London Chop House
caricaturist ... on his 100th birthday ...
celebrated, last week, with two parties
at the Fleischman Residence, where
Hy lives ... Afternoon, for 80 residents
and friends, was with three live
clowns, and a display of Hy's clown
paintings ... The evening, for another
80 family and friends, had a cake with
100 candles for him to blow out ...
and a display of his clown paintings ...
Hy still does clowns, but very little
painting of them ... They're now most-
ly sketches ... He hasn't done carica-
tures of people in years.
HIS SPORTS ANECDOTES are
endless.
