Forum Examines
Public-School Ruling

A Jewish law professor at the
University of Detroit Mercy
will moderate a colloquium
on the 75th anniversary of a
U.S. Supreme Court ruling
that struck down an Oregon
law requiring parents to
send their school-aged chil-
dren to public schools.
"The event is being held
to elaborate on the meaning,
history and future of the lib-
erty value set forth in Pierce
v. Society of Sisters," said
Professor Richard A. Seid.
The University of Detroit
Mercy School of Law and
the Michigan Catholic
Conference will host
"Colloquium on Parents,
Religion, Children and
Schools - 75 Years After
Pierce v. Society of Sisters"
from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 6 at the UDM
School of Law, 651 E.
Jefferson, Detroit.
Registration is $30 and is
due by Oct. 2. Free parking

The Pierce court, recogniz-
ing the interest of the parent,

Eilu v' Eilu Plans Masoret Course

Eilu
Eilu, the adult Jewish
learning project of the
Michigan Conservative
movement, has announced
its schedule of fall classes. It
features a major new learn-
ing initiative called "Masoret
— Explorations of the
Jewish Tradition," a two-
semester course for beginner
adult learners that will be
team-taught by local
Conservative rabbis.
The classes will meet on 25
Wednesday nights, 7-9 p.m.
starting Oct. 11, at the Max
M. Fisher Building, 6735
Telegraph Road, Bloomfield
Township.
Masoret was developed
under the leadership of Rabbi
Joseph Krakoff of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek
and Rabbi Daniel Nevins of
Adat Shalom Synagogue and is
modeled on the Derekh Torah
program of the 92nd Street Y
in New York City. It is orga-
nized as a series of five study
modules, each consisting of
five sessions.
The classes include
"Concepts in Jewish Law,"

"Jewish History Through the

Ag es," "Jewish Life Cycle,"

"Jewish Prayer and Liturgy"
and "Exploring Jewish
Theology."
In addition to Rabbis
Krakoff and Nevins, Masoret
instructors will include Rabbis
Hal Greenwald, Elliot Pachter,
Charles Popky and others.
Tuition for Masoret is
$300. For students age 30 and
under, tuition is $180. There
is an additional fee for the
textbook. Enrollment will be
limited to 25 students.

labus are available from Eilu

Other fall classes being
offered by Eilu Eilu are:
"Swimming in the Sea of
Talmud: Lessons for Everyday
Living" with Rabbi Hal
Greenwald, one Tuesday night
a month at Borders Books &
Music in Birmingham.
Upcoming dates are Oct. 17
and Nov. 14.
