Ruth Miller Marcus has resigned from
the Hebrew Free Loan Association due
to illness; she suffered a heart attack ear-
lier this year.
Marcus joined
Detroit's HFLA in
1982 and become its
executive director in
1986, the first in the
agency's 100 years of
service to the Detroit
Jewish community
During her 18 years
Ruth Miller
with the agency,
Marcus
HFLA expanded its
loan volume and outreach. She staffed
the milestone celebrations of the
agency's 95th and centennial celebra-
tions.
During her tenure, Marcus, along
with certain key volunteers and the

HFLA board, was instrumental in devel-
oping the Neighborhood Project and
HFLAs continuing role in this Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit pro-
gram. Hebrew Free Loan's activity in
both the Jewish Educational Loan
Service and the resettlement of Russian
immigrants in our community was
widened due in part to Marcus' efforts.
Recently, she coordinated contact with
Jewish communities in Michigan to help
meet the needs of the Jewish poor out-
side of the Detroit area.
For more than 10 years, Marcus rep-
resented the Detroit HFLA to the
International Association of Hebrew
Free Loans. She served as its president
from 1996-98. Recently, Marcus had
been helping to coordinate the annual
conference planned in metro Detroit
this fall.
