Temple Beth El
Hosts Dr. Gordon
Dr. Sol Gordon, psychologist,
author, lecturer will be Temple
Beth El's 2000 Bargman Scholar
over the weekend of Sept. 22-23.
Formerly chief psychologist at
the
Philadelphia
Child
Guidance
and the

County
Mental
Health
Clinics,
Gordon has
taught at
Dr. Sol Gordon
Yeshiva
University
and at Syracuse University, where
he was professor of child and fam-
ily studies and founding director
of the Institute for Family
Research and Education.
At Beth El, Gordon will focus
on creating loving family relation-
ships and reaching out to children
in pain. His Shabbat evening topic
at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, will
be "When Living Hurts." For
Selichot, the penitential prayer ser-
vice held prior to the Days of Awe,
Gordon's topic at 8 p.m. Saturday,
Sept. 23, is "When Loving Heals."
Beth El uses Gordon's book,
When Living Hurts, in its "Reach
for Hope" youth suicide-preven-
tion program. In the book's pref-
ace, Gordon states, "I write for
young people of all faiths, little
faith, no faith and for those still
searching. I wrote to encourage
you to stand for something; other-
wise you may fall for anything."
In his books, Gordon reaches
out to adolescents and their fami-
lies. He offers advice on how to
confront loneliness, depression,
boredom, disappointment, frus-
tration and fears. Topics he
explores include loss of faith, sex-
uality and suicide. He tells how to
reach out to a friend, connect
with one's parents and talk to
one's child.
Both programs with Gordon
are open to the community with-
out charge. The Theodore and
Mina Bargman Foundation
underwrite the annual Bargman
Lecture.
If someone in your family was tested for the Tay-Sachs gene and
the test was screened by Corning Clinical Laboratories, MetPath,
MetWest or Quest Diagnostics between 1992 and 1998, please
contact us to determine whether you need to schedule a free retest
to confirm your results. For women and couples who are pregnant
or plan to become pregnant, we urge you to contact us immediately.
We expect that retesting will validate "non-carrier" status for
approximately 99% of individuals being recommended for retesting.
For information or to speak to one of our genetic counselors or
physicians, please call toll-free 1-877-806-8175 at any time.
