The International Association of Hebrew Free Loan will hold its annual conference at the Troy Marriott Hotel Saturday - Monday, Sept. 16-18. Attending will be directors of Hebrew Free Loan associations from major cities in the United States and Canada. The IAHFL has 50 member HFLAs and has been active for -20 years. The conference will be hosted by the HFLA of Detroit, which has branches in Flint and Grand Rapids. During the conference, the IAHFL will have its annual award banquet, where it will honor host members' exemplary philanthropists with its Maimonides G'millut Chassodim Award. The banquet will be 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18. Honorees will be Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Penny Blumenstein and Emery Klein, a a former president of Hebrew Free Loan and Federation leader, for outstanding service to HFL and being supporters of many causes in the community To coincide with these awards, the HFLA of Detroit will confer its annual Legacy Award to Marlene Borman, the first woman president of HFLA. The keynote speaker will be Joel Tauber, chairman of the executive com- mittee of the United Jewish Communities and past president of the United Jewish Appeal. Presenting the awards to Blumenstein and Klein will be Dr. Conrad Giles, vice chairman of the executive committee of the United Jewish Communities. Presenting the award to Borman will be Robert Aronson, chief executive officer of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. Marcus joined Detroit's HFLA in 1982 and become its executive director in 1986, the first in the agency's 100 years of service to the Detroit Jewish community During her 18 years Ruth Miller with the agency, Marcus HFLA expanded its loan volume and outreach. She staffed the milestone celebrations of the agency's 95th and centennial celebra- tions. During her tenure, Marcus, along with certain key volunteers and the HFLA board, was instrumental in devel- oping the Neighborhood Project and HFLAs continuing role in this Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit pro- gram. Hebrew Free Loan's activity in both the Jewish Educational Loan Service and the resettlement of Russian immigrants in our community was widened due in part to Marcus' efforts. Recently, she coordinated contact with Jewish communities in Michigan to help meet the needs of the Jewish poor out- side of the Detroit area. For more than 10 years, Marcus rep- resented the Detroit HFLA to the International Association of Hebrew Free Loans. She served as its president from 1996-98. Recently, Marcus had been helping to coordinate the annual conference planned in metro Detroit this fall.
