JCCs Get
$500,000 Grant
Groups Mourn
Cardinal's Death
Boston/JTA
The umbrella organi-
zation for U.S. Jewish community
centers received a $500,000 grant to
establish a center for Jewish educa-
tion aimed at increasing Jewish con-
tent' at JCCs across the United
States.
The grant to the Jewish
Community Centers Association
from the Cleveland-based Mandel
Foundation was announced at the
JCCA biennial in Boston.
Several Jewish organizations issued
statements following the death last-
week of Cardinal John O'Connor,
Archbishop of New York:
•Central Conference of American
Rabbis, which represents the North
American Reform rabbinate: "He
will be remembered for his commit-
ment to his faith, economic justice
and for his strong opposition to the
death penalty and to antisemitism, as
well as many acts of friendship
toward the Jewish community."
•Orthodox Union, which repre-
sents the Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America: "The
Orthodox Union records with deep
sadness the passing of a towering fig-
ure of guidance and inspiration to
his flock, and a principled, compas-
sionate friend to the Jewish people
and to all humanity."
•B'nai B'rith International:
"Perhaps more than any other high
official of the Roman Catholic
Church — with the exception of
Pope John Paul II himself—
Cardinal O'Connor recognized the
grave injustices done to the Jewish
people historically by members of his
own Church, and he sought to make
amends for them."

New York/JTA — Fifth- through
eighth-graders at North American
Jewish day schools are receiving their
own magazine, loosely modeled on
Junior Scholastic but intended to
show the relevance of Jewish values
to current events.
The first issue of Babaganewz fea-
tures articles on a teen who fought
for the right to wear a Jewish star to
school and historical fiction about a
Jewish immigrant girl.
ADL Blasts
Mock Camp

World Briefs
New York/JTA — The Anti-
Defamation League called on offi-
cials at Sarah Lawrence College to
speak out against a mock concentra-
tion camp that was set up on the
campus as part of a protest against
Israel's treatment of Lebanese citi-
zens.
Students at the Bronxville, N.Y.,
school have the right "to air their
views on the complex situation in
the Middle East," the ADL wrote to
the school's president, but compar-
ing that situation to the Holocaust is
"highly offensive."
House Presses
Red Cross
Washington/JTA — The U.S. House
of Representatives passed a resolution
calling on the International
Committee of the Red Cross to grant
full membership and recognition to
the Magen David Adorn Society and
its Star of David emblem.
The international body recently
suggested it may accept Israel's relief
agency if it uses a different emblem.
Australian Church
Makes Apology
Sydney, Australia/JTA — Australia's
third largest Christian denomination
issued an apology to the Jewish corn-
munity and vowed to change its poli-
cies.
The Uniting Church took the
steps after it emerged that church
officials give preferential treatment to
Christians in a government-funded
project to help unemployed
Australians find jobs.
