Jews For Jesus
Logo Protested

Toronto/JTA — The Canadian Jewish
Congress is fighting a governmental
decision that allows an international
Jews for Jesus group with churches in
Toronto and Montreal to use a menora
as a copyright-protected logo.
The Canadian Jewish Congress said
it is "offensive, scandalous and immoral"
for Chosen People Ministries to use the
menora as its emblem.

Israel Remembers
Its War Dead

Jerusalem/JTA — Ceremonies were held
across Israel on Tuesday to remember its
fallen soldiers.
In Israeli Arab and fervently
Orthodox neighborhoods, however,
many residents ignored the two-minute
Memorial Day sirens.
In Jerusalem's Mea Shearim neigh-
borhood, posters appeared declaring that
it is not a Jewish tradition to stop all
activity at the sound of a siren.

Shul Program
Meets Success

New York/JTA — The first compre-
hensive study on a Jewish family educa-
tion initiative reported that participating
parents significantly increased atten-
dance at services and felt a deepened
commitment to Jewish life.
But the study added that the partici-
pants' sense of connection to their syna-
gogue increased only slightly.
The study of Boston's five-year-old
"Sharim" program, in which the local
Jewish federation helped pay for full-
time family educators at 11 synagogues,
also found "little evidence" that the pro-
gram had improved "the Jewish quality
of families' lives at home."

Clinton Urged
On Sanctions

Washington/JTA — U.S. Rep. Joseph
Crowley, D-N.Y., said he is concerned
that Israel would be threatened if sanc-
tions against Iraq are lifted.
One hundred twenty-five members
of Congress signed a letter to President
Clinton urging him to continue sanc-
tions against Iraq to prevent an Iraqi
arms buildup that they say would
threaten U.S. national security interests.
