The grant to the Jewish Community Centers Association from the Cleveland-based Mandel Foundation was announced at the JCCA biennial in Boston. Several Jewish organizations issued statements following the death last- week of Cardinal John O'Connor, Archbishop of New York: •Central Conference of American Rabbis, which represents the North American Reform rabbinate: "He will be remembered for his commit- ment to his faith, economic justice and for his strong opposition to the death penalty and to antisemitism, as well as many acts of friendship toward the Jewish community." •Orthodox Union, which repre- sents the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America: "The Orthodox Union records with deep sadness the passing of a towering fig- ure of guidance and inspiration to his flock, and a principled, compas- sionate friend to the Jewish people and to all humanity." •B'nai B'rith International: "Perhaps more than any other high official of the Roman Catholic Church — with the exception of Pope John Paul II himself— Cardinal O'Connor recognized the grave injustices done to the Jewish people historically by members of his own Church, and he sought to make amends for them." — Looking for an inexpensive weekend getaway? ADL Blasts Mock Camp " `'v*. ‘ , 101 World Briefs New York/JTA — The Anti- Defamation League called on offi- cials at Sarah Lawrence College to speak out against a mock concentra- tion camp that was set up on the campus as part of a protest against Israel's treatment of Lebanese citi- zens. Students at the Bronxville, N.Y., school have the right "to air their views on the complex situation in the Middle East," the ADL wrote to the school's president, but compar- ing that situation to the Holocaust is "highly offensive." House Presses Red Cross Washington/JTA — The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution calling on the International Committee of the Red Cross to grant full membership and recognition to the Magen David Adorn Society and its Star of David emblem. The international body recently suggested it may accept Israel's relief agency if it uses a different emblem. Australian Church Makes Apology Sydney, Australia/JTA — Australia's third largest Christian denomination issued an apology to the Jewish corn- munity and vowed to change its poli- cies. The Uniting Church took the steps after it emerged that church officials give preferential treatment to Christians in a government-funded project to help unemployed Australians find jobs.
