Culinary Salon in Germany this fall.
The panel of media judges included
Molly Abraham, Oakland Press and
Macomb Daily; Jane Rayburn, Detroit
News; Susan Selasky, Detroit Free Press;
Ron Garbinski, Michigan Living, Ron
and Beverly Hatcher, Daily Tribune;
Ray and Eleanor Heald, Observer &
Eccentric; Chris Cook, Oakland Press;
and Megan Swoyer, Style Magazine ...
they evaluated each participating
restaurant on visual presentation, food
composition, food quality, wine quali-
ty and how the food and wine com-
plemented each other.
Mon Jin Lau, which previously
received top honors in 1997, took first
place again with its Chicken with
Peanut Sauce on Sesame Noodles,
paired with a 1998 Chalone Vineyard
Pinot Blanc.
In second place was the 1999 win-
ner, Cafe Cortina of Farmington Hills,
with its Tortellini with Tomato and
Cream Sauce and 1996 Palazzo Della
Toree. ... Grey Gables Inn of
Charlevoix, took third place with
Escargot wrapped in Phyllo with Garlic
and Thyme, paired with a 1997 Bowers
Harbor Vineyards Chardonnay.
As the first-place finisher, Mon Jin
Lau received a cash prize and person-
alized traveling trophy to display in
the Troy restaurant.
Some highlights of the event, we're
told ... were Beans and Cornbread
serving spicy barbecued shrimp and
sweet potato muffins which, according
to several judges, were good enough
for them to be in the top five ... The
Andiamo Family of Restaurants, repre-
sented by Trattoria Andiamo,
Andiamo Lakefront Bistro and
Andiamo Italia, were solid participants
with a range of Italian delicacies rang-
ing from veal and cheese-stuffed shells
to peppercorn-encrusted salmon ...
Although Tom's Oyster Bar won Best
Table Display, Grey Gables Inn from
Charlevoix was a close second with an
ornate sterling silver candelabra
anchoring its table ... Not to be out-
done, the Sterling Inn attracted its
share of attention with a stuffed otter
that greeted guests to the table.
Seafood was popular throughout
the evening with lobster and crab
cakes served by Mac & Ray's; lobster
nori roll from Streetside Seafood;
lobster terrine from Beach Grill;
piri-piri shrimp bruschetta from
Zuccaro; pecan-crusted trout from
Paint Creek Restaurant; shrimp
pierogies from Crews Inn; andouille-
crusted catfish from Golden
Mushroom; and sauteed crawfish
from Midtown Cafe. III
