ago. About the food
at Evergreen Health
& Living ... thanks
to people like
Gregg Caruss,
director of nutri-
tion service, most
of the breakfasts,
lunches and dinners
are above average for such an institu-
tion ... To patient Eunice Michelson,
who came to Evergreen with enough
clothes to go dancing every night, the
food is surprisingly good.
Hickory Grove patients love it
when Reid Ashton comes to visit his
mother, Elaine Ashton ... The Golden
Mushroom owner brings his beautiful,
well-mannered, light brown Labrador
... and how they enjoy him ..
Evergreen social worker, Risa Blau,
daughter of Louise and Hy Pilchik,
makes many friends with her kindly
and knowledgeable ways.
Entertainment is always very wel-
come ... like the many who gathered
in the dining room to hear Cantor
Steven Dubov of Temple Beth El sing
oldies and show tunes without accom-
paniment ... His beautiful, operatic
voice has few equals.
Rabbi A. Irving Schnipper, retired
from Congregation Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses (now Congregation Beth
Ahm), comes twice a month with his
trusty tambourine ... joining in with
Jews and non-Jews during singing por-
tions of his services.
No hospital institution, however
good, is a place one would want to
spend too much time in as a patient ...
But if necessity deems otherwise, I
would say that Evergreen Health &
Living is probably considered among
the best.
WHEN SOUTHEAST Michigan's
culinary community celebrated
"Mardi Gras in Michigan," they toast-
ed their glasses and raised their forks
to first-place winner for
Best Overall Restaurant, Mon Jin
Lau of Troy ... and Best Table Display
winner, Tom's Oyster Bar (several loca-
tions) ... at the fifth annual Michigan
Culinary Food & Wine Extravaganza
2000 ... The event at Mac & Ray's
harborfront restaurant in Harrison
Township, featured 24 metro Detroit
restaurants displaying delicacies and
wine pairings.
Nearly 900 guests attended the
event ... with $50,000 raised for the
Michigan Culinary Team and
Scholarship Fund ... The strong sup-
port from the restaurant community
will also provide the Michigan
Culinary Team assistance to the World
