One section of Price's Web site is
titled, "How are Jew?" and includes
her favorite Jewish-oriented strips,
including the gardening tips strip and
a poem about the "tiny, token
Chanuka shelf," hidden past all the
Christmas decorations.
"You go into a store and there's red
and green everywhere," she explains,
"and in the back, there's one place
with blue and silver. That's the
Chanuka shelf."
Price is a big fan of other cartoon-
ists. "I read them all," she says. Her
favorites include Doonesbwy, For Better
or For Worse and Speed Bump. She
admits that she is nor a fan of the old
serial cartoons, such as Apartment 3G.
She admires the strip Boondocks. "It
stares racial relations in the face and
talks about them in a contemporary
perspective. And yes, that stirs up con-
troversy. I think it's brave of the syndi-
cate to take it on," she notes.
And, of course, she admires the
work of the late Charles Schulz, creator
of "Peanuts." Of all the "Peanuts" char-
acters, Snoopy is.a favorite. "Snoopy
could be all things to all people," she
has written. "His irrepressible joy, his
confidence, his beagle Zen-ness —
these are qualities worth aspiring to."
In the end, "the ultimate test is
whether its funny enough or true
enough. If people find it true enough, it
belongs on the comics page," says Price
Even with her strip seen around the
country and a book to her credit, she
still hopes to grow.
"I still feel Rhymes with Orange is a
small to medium strip; I'd love to get
it out there more." she admits.
Because the strip doesn't have
ongoing characters, marketing tie-ins
are limited. "There will be no plush
toys in the future," says Price.
However, there is the possibility of
greeting cards.
For now, with her dog, Doxie, at
her side, Price keeps putting her
quirky stamp on the comics pages.
"The thing I'm aiming for in the
strip is to have people say, 'Yes, that's
true; that's happened to me,'"' she says.
""I get to make a living writing and
drawing. It's so neat to get paid for
doing something you like doing."
