CHANGING OF THE GUARD?
ON THE BOARDWALK
Although talk has been made of his suc-
ceeding Max Fisher as the new voice of
the Detroit Jewish community Tauber
himself says that's impossible.
"No one will take over MaxVrole
because what he accomplishedwas at
a very unique time in Jewish history,
and history presents opportunity,"
Tauber said. "He was almostIone of
the only Jewish Republican in the
1940s and '50s.
"Secondly, the Israeli government
in the 1950s had no connection to the
U.S. president or the government, and
third, he was the first 14e fund-raiser
for Israel.
"So you take those three combina-
tions and he was in a position to serve
as the connection between Israel, the
American government and the Jewish
community," Tauber said.
"Today, Prime Minister Ehud Barak
picks up the phone to call President
Clinton and the president takes the
call, which wasn't true in 1950," he
added. "Max was there at that unique
time: There are all kinds of people to
make that connection now."
Tauber may not replace Fisher, but
he will remain committed.
"There's no way, as long as I can
walk, talk and breathe, that I would
give up the commitment to the Jewish
people," Tauber said. "That's part of
my psyche."
With the UJC in place, "I see for
the coming generation this opportuni-
ty to fulfill their culture and spiritual
values." ❑

Hermelin, of Bingham Farms,
knew of Tauber's leadership qualities
at an early age.
"When you chose up sides, and
you had to figure out who were cap-
tains, Joel was always a captain,"
Hermelin said. "It was never difficult
to figure out who should be chairman
or president or leader when Joel was
one of the choices."
Tauber solicited Hermelin's first
gift to the federation.
Recounted Hermelin: "Here's Joel
Tauber, who is involved in a very large
business, invites me for lunch. I'm in
the insurance business, what could he
be inviting me for lunch for? I figured
I'd get his business. Part way through
lunch, he reaches in his inside pocket
and he has my card for UJA."
Tauber recalled, "He thought I was
going off to talk to him about the
insurance business and I got 50 bucks
off of him. Eventually, I gave him the
business anyway."

1-696 Plaza Work
To Disrupt Traffic
R
epairs on the three pedestrian
plazas built over 1-696 to allow
Orthodox Jews to walk to shul may
begin as early as Friday, Jan. 28, dos-
ing the freeway on weekends and cer-
tain lanes during the week.
The $7.1 million project replacing
about 100 concrete beams will affect
between 170,000 and 200,000
motorists a day. Completion is expect-
ed in late spring.
The-eastbound 1-696 detour will
take motorists south on the Lodge
(M-10) to Eight Mile Road east, to I-
75 north, back to 1-696 east.
The westbound 1-696 detour will
guide motorists to 1-75 south to west-
bound Eight Mile Road, to northbound
Lodge, back to westbound 1-696.
When work calls for removal or
replacement of the beams, these access
ramps will be closed on weekends:
• Eastbound 1-696 — closure of
ramps at southbound. Lodge (M-10),
northbound Telegraph (US-24),
northbound and southbound Lahser,
Evergreen, Southfield and Greenfield
roads.
• Westbound 1-696 — closure of
ramps at Cousins, northbound and
southbound 1-75, Campbell-Hilton,
Woodward (M-1), Coolidge and
Greenfield roads.
Weekend closures begin at 9 p.m.
Fridays until 5 a.m. Mondays.
The plazas, or decks, located
between Southfield Road and Coolidge
Highway in Sciuthfield and Oak Park,
were the first of their kind to be built
over a freeway in the United States.
Combined, the three plazas provide
nearly eight acres of community park-
land, including walkways, bike paths,
grassy areas and playgrounds.
The decks in Oak Park are
Charlotte M. Rothstein Park, located
north of the Jimmy Prentis Morris
Building of the Jewish Community
Center, and Victoria Park, north of
the Sally Allan Alexander Beth Jacob
School for Girls, east of Church
Street. In Southfield, Freeway Park is
off Fairfax Road, west of Greenfield
and Yeshiva Beth Yehudah School for
Boys on West Lincoln Drive.
Trees, grassy areas and playground
equipment will be replaced at the end of
the bridge-beam work, and the entire
plaza superstructure — 1,000 concrete
beams — will be given a reinforced,
fiber wrapping for added strength. ❑
