HAVEN In Heaven

Temporary location
helps agency provide
shelter to victims of
domestic violence.

T

he new mood at HAVEN is
almost heavenly.
By Feb. 5, a temporary location in
Pontiac will provide sanctuary for up
to 16 abused women and their chil-
dren. A fire Nov. 14 forced theclosing
of HAVEN's domestic violence shelter,
which is expected to reopen in about
six to eight months.
"We're very excited," said Hedy
Nuriel, president and CEO of
HAVEN, an acronym for Help
Against Violent Encounters Now
"We've had to refer people to homeless
shelters in Oakland County or domes-
tic violence shelters outside of the
county until now."
HAVEN counsels people and pro-
vides educational programs on domes-
tic violence, sexual assault and child
abuse. One of its functions is provid-
ing a shelter for women and children
who are victims of domestic violence.
Other HAVEN programs based at dif-
ferent locations were not disrupted by
the November fire and have contin-
ued.
Nuriel said the fire started in a
vacant room and probably was caused
by a young child playing with match-
es. The burned-out shelter, in a build-
ing dating from the 1920s, is going to
be brought up to code by HAVEN.
Electrical wiring will be installed to
accommodate computers and the
building will be made handicapper
accessible.
"It's going to be much better than
it was before," Nuriel said. "We're
ecstatic!"
Since the fire, HAVEN has received
"unbelievable" assistance from the
community, including all the supplies
it can handle, she said.
However, cash donations for the
shelter and other programs still are
welcome at 75 Huron St., Pontiac, MI
48342.
"We're very, very grateful for people
coming to our aid," Nuriel said.
"Schoolchildren have collected dimes
and quarters and corporations have
given us aid. And we have a lot of very
strong support from the Jewish com-
munity." ❑
