Kelly ... Since that day, Hy did clowns
as well as his famed caricatures.
One time, Hy says, two fellows came
into the London Chop House and said,
'Moe Dalitz in Las Vegas liked that
clown you have over there. We want to
buy it for him'" ... Hy soon discovered
that a lot of people loved clowns ...
happy faces, sad faces, etc.
He has since had many one-man
showings of his clown works ... even
today he still does ... The walls of his
Fleishman Residence apartment are
also lined with so many of the clowns
he has done.
A sad date Hy will never forget is
the one in 1992 when all his famed
caricatures were sold at auction ... The
London Chop House, was then
owned by Lainie Pincus, widow of
Max Pincus, with whom she had pur-
chased it after Les Gruber passed on.
The pencil, charcoal and watercolor
caricatures were signed and auto-
graphed by the celebrities.
George Jessel, Raymond Burr,
Nancy Sinatra, Roslyn Russell,
Howard Cosell, Buddy Ebsen, etc.
were each sold for $425.
The double caricature of Jimmy
Durante was sold for $800 ... Ed
Wynn brought $450; Edward G.
Robinson, $550; Hermione Gingold,
$225; a picture with Detroit Tigers
players Birdie Tebbetts, Fred
Hutchinson and Mickey Cochrane
sold for $400.
Dick Shawn, Veronica Lake and
Leo Durocher, framed as a triplet
offering, brought $650.
A book that was used at the auction
to tell what was for sale, is a cherished
souvenir of his ... Hy was there that
day, seven years ago ... and as they
were sold in auction, he marked down
the amounts... shaking his head as if
to say, "They meant so much to me,
and were worth so much more. "
But today, Hy has his clowns ...
And nothing can replace this love.
MAIL DEPT. ... "I just wanted to
drop you a little note because I read
your column on the Internet since I
work in Washington, D.C. It is really
fun being reminded of people and
places I remember as well as people
and places I was told about when I
was younger. Often I send copies of
your columns to Sylvia Boesky who
now lives in Florida.
"Especially when' you mention the
deli. Just so you know, she hasn't
changed a whole lot over the years. Her
74th birthday is in October and she is
as young and vibrant as ever. Although
no longer in the restaurant business,
she sells real estate full time when she
