One time, Hy says, two fellows came into the London Chop House and said, 'Moe Dalitz in Las Vegas liked that clown you have over there. We want to buy it for him'" ... Hy soon discovered that a lot of people loved clowns ... happy faces, sad faces, etc. He has since had many one-man showings of his clown works ... even today he still does ... The walls of his Fleishman Residence apartment are also lined with so many of the clowns he has done. A sad date Hy will never forget is the one in 1992 when all his famed caricatures were sold at auction ... The London Chop House, was then owned by Lainie Pincus, widow of Max Pincus, with whom she had pur- chased it after Les Gruber passed on. The pencil, charcoal and watercolor caricatures were signed and auto- graphed by the celebrities. George Jessel, Raymond Burr, Nancy Sinatra, Roslyn Russell, Howard Cosell, Buddy Ebsen, etc. were each sold for $425. The double caricature of Jimmy Durante was sold for $800 ... Ed Wynn brought $450; Edward G. Robinson, $550; Hermione Gingold, $225; a picture with Detroit Tigers players Birdie Tebbetts, Fred Hutchinson and Mickey Cochrane sold for $400. Dick Shawn, Veronica Lake and Leo Durocher, framed as a triplet offering, brought $650. A book that was used at the auction to tell what was for sale, is a cherished souvenir of his ... Hy was there that day, seven years ago ... and as they were sold in auction, he marked down the amounts... shaking his head as if to say, "They meant so much to me, and were worth so much more.
