The Philadelphia resident will speak
at the ZOA's Southfield ZOA office
on Friday morning, Oct. 15.
Klein spoke by phone with the
Jewish News this week to discuss his
views on current conditions of the
tenuous Israeli-Palestinian dialogue.
His remarks have been abridged for
length.

deeply disappointed that six years
after the Oslo Accords were signed,
Yasser Arafat has not banned terror
organizations, which Oslo requires;
has not gotten rid of the illegal
weapons in the territories, which
Oslo requires; has not stopped the
incitement, the calling for hatred
and violence against Jews, the calling
for holy war. We thought that six
years after Oslo, we would start to
see the developments of a legitimate
regime who cares about human
rights, who cares about peace."

So, would you qualify this as a
matter of trust?
"What do you mean, trust? It's
not a matter of trust; it's a matter of
Arafat's behavior!"

But if you don't have any sort of
confidence in that behavior .. .
"It's six years. Arafat has not done
any of the things we thought he
would do within the first six
months.
It's not a matter of trust; its a
matter of seeing his actions. If
someone is dating a man, and
they're engaged and he's
cheating on her every
weekend, do you say to
her, Well, don't you trust
him?'"

When you speak pub-
licly, do you expect con-
frontation?
"Confrontation? I have
been speaking once a week,
on average, somewhere in
the United States.
I speak primarily at
Morton
Reform and
Klein
Conservative congrega-
tions, Jewish commu-
nity centers, federa-
tions, JCRCs [Jewish
Community
Relations Councils]
and for other orga-
nizations when
they have dinners
and whatnot. I
have never had
anything but a
positive response.
