GLOSSMOM OLDSMOBILE

Oldsmobile.

Never. Because American Jews
understand these problems and have
the same concerns that I have.
"I've almost never had even a hos-
tile question — in other words, a
question asked rudely. I mean, it's
happened once or twice, literally, in
six years. I see that American Jews,
when you simply point out the facts,
are very sensible and understand
that this is not what any of us want.
In other words, it doesn't matter
whether you're right wing, left wing,
or centrist."

How do you define peaceful
coexistence between these parties,
and how do these sides rely on each
other?
"Rely on each other? You act like
there's a moral equivalence here.
What do you mean, rely on each
other? The ball is in Arafat's court."

What do you see as the differ-
ence between speaking in Israel and
speaking here in the United States?
"In Israel, in six years I've given five
talks. So I don't have any extensive
experience there. I have to say, in
Israel, I have a similar response of
deep concern about Arafat's behavior.
Even there [Israel], the clear
majority still believes that Arafat
wants to destroy Israel. So the
Israelis, not quite to the extent of
the American Jews, are deeply disap-
pointed in Arafat's behavior and
wish his behavior would change."

But is this to say that Israeli
audiences have similar levels of
knowledge and intelligence about
the issue as do Americans?
"I would say I don't know the
Israelis well enough to give a valu-
able judgment. But I will say this:
We Jews have not done a very good
job of combating the lies they
[Arabs] say about Israel and
Jerusalem. And we have to do a bet-
ter job of that."

— Next week: A conversation
with Rashid Khalidi, a scholar and
prominent Arab American historian,
who also is coming to speak locally.

Morton Klein will speak at 9:30
a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, in the audi-
torium of the ZOA offices,
17100 W. 10 Mile Road,
Southfield. For information, call
the ZOA, (248) 569-9945.
