he 75 guests who gathered
around the pool at the D.
Dan & Betty Kahn Jewish
Community Center in
West Bloomfield were way over-
dressed for swimming.
Appropriately clad for the July 18
dedication of the Ann F. and
Norman D. Katz Outdoor Pool and
Plaza, the group met for a formal
ceremony and unveiling of a name
plaque.
Both extensively involved in the

Detroit Jewish community, Norman
Katz said he and his wife, Ann, of
Bloomfield Hills, wanted to make a
contribution that would benefit
family life as well as help strengthen
Jewish identity.
A former president of the now
closed United Hebrew Schools, Katz
said he feels strongly about the
importance of Jewish education,
while adding that it need not always
be in the form of traditional class-
room teaching. "Much of our identi-
ty and education comes from experi-
ence and participation," he said.
Seeking a location for their phil-
anthropic project, the
Katzes, with four children
and 11 grandchildren,
decided on the Center as "a
place where the whole family
can participate and can learn
together in a Jewish social
setting." 1 I
