From July 2-6, Wohl will meet the
rest of the U.S. basketball team in
New York for four grueling days of
three practices daily.
"I think we're at a disadvantage
because we've never played together,"
he said. "I assume Israel and other
smaller countries have had the whole
year to work together."
Not having that time has Wohl
pushing hard to prepare himself now.
"I'm trying to think about how
great an opportunity this is and get
myself in the best condition I can,"
he said. He's in the middle of off-
season workouts with his West
Bloomfield team, and practices
often at the JCC. "I don't want to
go there to lose," Wohl said.
The Pan American Games take
place every four years, two years after
the International Maccabiah in Israel.
Sixteen countries, including the host
country and the U.S., will be compet-
ing in Mexico: Argentina, Australia,
Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia,
Costa Rica, Guatemala, Israel,
Panama, Peru, Uruguay and
Venezuela. Organizers are hopeful that
Cuba will be attending as well.
The U.S. team will travel en masse
to Mexico, after gathering in Dallas
on July 8; the Pan American games
kick off with the opening ceremonies
on Sunday, July 11.
Horowitz and Deitch, both veter-
ans of international competition, will
be joining Wohl on the journey, while
another athlete who was to compete,
Bill Berris of West Bloomfield, stays
home due to injury.
Horowitz was a gold medal-win-
ning bowler in 1997 in Israel and has
the honor of captaining the team this
year.
"I'm preparing the same as I did
for Israel," said the 60-year-old, who's
the oldest member of the U.S. team.
"We're going there with the intent of
winning gold medals."
