104 Detroit Jewish News

to-be, Charlie Chung, remained as
chef at Peking House in Royal Oak ...
and today owns Empress Gardens in
Harvard Row on 11 Mile ... Site of
the Chinese restaurant that never
opened is now Excalibur.
MIKE WATZMAN, who owned
Be My Guest on 9 Mile and
Middlebelt, was the same gent who
had Carl & Mike's Meat Market years
back on 7 Mile and Littlefield ... Be
My Guest sat 175 and sold a lot of
square pizzas and Greek salads.
YASSOO CAN mean many things
... as a salutation, toast or goodbye ...
But to people who discovered Yassoo
Greek Village on Woodward, south of
14 Mile, it stood for one thing only ...
all-around dining goodness ... After
numerous restaurants in the spot, it is
back again to Greek ... as Little
Daddy's of Royal Oak.
ON ORCHARD LAKE Road, just
south of Maple, Fiddler on the Rye
was a delicatessen owned by Inge and
Larry Stockier ... But folks could have
a pizza, too, or other Italian specialties
to go along with some good, old-fash-
ioned Jewish cooking.
THE LANDING on Southfield and
10 Mile was full of rumors about being
sold ... It closed and soon became a
restaurant with a new name ... and the
same owners ... serving middle-eastern
food ... and called the Sultan's Table.
It used to be named King's Arms ...
and then Christopher's, owned by
Chris Triffon, who introduced me to
my wife, Frieda ... Chris' daughter,
Madeline Triffon, today is Unique
Restaurant Corporation's excellent wine
director and master sommelier.
AS A SINGLES bar, Ginopolis' on
12 Mile and Middlebelt was voted
among America's top ones by Playboy
Magazine ... After reversing directions
with a new name, Ginopolis' on the
Grill, a full menu from an open-hearth
kitchen and large decor change, it
became a full-fledged family restaurant.
TONY BENNETT broke all
records at the Roostertail ... with his
appearance by mistake ...The red-hot
Supremes were originally booked for
the engagement, but a disagreement
between Roostertail management and
Motown Records, who owned the
Supremes, caused the cancellation.
MOST POPULAR STORY to
come out of South Haven, Mich., one
year was of the irate guest at a hotel in
the resort town ... He grabbed the tele-
phone and hollered into it, "Are you
the desk clerk at this dilapidated joint?
... The clerk answered, "Yes, I am.
What's eating you?" ... "That," said the
Guest "is what I'd like to know." 17
