AUCTION AT THE
Weizmann Institute
Traces Alzheimer's
A "Science Forum" with Weizmann
Institute of Science Professor Joel
Sussman will be
held in
Bloomfield Hills
on Wednesday,
April 14.
Sussman, who
teaches in the
Department of
Structural
Biology,
authored a
Professor
Weizmann
Joel
Sussman
Institute study
-,that has implica-
tions for treating Alzheimer's disease.
The study shows exactly how a sub-
stance derived from Huperzine A, a
moss long used in Chinese folk
medicine, blocks the brain enzyme
acetycholinesterase (AchE), which
may be involved in Alzheimer's dis-
ease.
"It is as if this natural substance
were ingeniously designed to fit into
the exact spot, AchE, where it will
do the most good," noted Sussman,
who suggests that this may provide a
starting point for designing a new,
improved generation of drugs to
treat Alzheimer's disease.
According to one theory, memory
loss and other cognitive deficits in
-'=Alzheimer patients result from
degeneration of nerve cells that
release the message-carrying chemi-
cal acetycholine. The shortage of
this chemical is compounded by the
action of AchE, the enzyme that
brea'.,s down acetycholine in the •
1 body.
The new study — performed by
\- X-ray crystallography — revealed
exactly how the blocking of the
enzyme takes place. The U.S. Army,
the Weizmann Institute and the
Scientific Cooperative of the
European Union provided support
for the study.
In 1979, Sussman was awarded
the E.D. Bergmann Prize for out-
i\ standing research in chemistry in
Israel.
The Weizmann Institute of
Science, in Rehovot, Israel, is a cen-
ter of scientific research and gradu-
ate study for 2,500 scientists, stu-
dents, technicians and engineers.
The Science Forum will take
place at 7 p.m. in a private home.
