ancy M. Margolis, executive
director of the Jewish
Community Center and
the Jewish Federation of
Washtenaw County, will receive a
1999 Anti-Defamation League
Women of Achievement Award.
Margolis was nominated by co-
workers Judie Lax and Alissa Parker,
Margolis' assistant and JCC event
coordinator, who said she wanted to
honor the woman whose "absolutely
incredible list of accomplishments is
beyond belief."
Lax, endowment director of the
Washtenaw Jewish Community
Endowment Fund, said Margolis
"spent the last 40 years making the
world a better place," with "the
capacity to bring people together
through career choices and volun-
teer activities."
Margolis has worked to counteract
discrimination by developing many
educational and social service pro-
grams. She's a founder of the
Black/Jewish Coalition of the JCC
and the Celebrate Diversity! Cultural

Fair. As former deputy director of the
Washtenaw County Community
Services Agency, she developed anti-
poverty programs, including the
Corner Health Center in Ypsilanti,
an agency to provide health care for
low-income adolescents and their
babies, and CSA Enterprises, a pri-
vate non-profit corporation to help
start businesses that provide jobs for
the unemployed. Under her leader-
ship, the JCC was honored by the
Willow Run Branch of the NAACP.
Margolis, 63, of Ann Arbor, called
the award "a little overwhelming,"
adding that as "a supporter for so
many years, of the ADL and their
mission and goals," she "mainly
accepted the award because it was a
wonderful way of promoting the
work of the ADL."
Lax added that in "bringing dif-
ferent diverse groups together, with
her infectious smile and upbeat
attitute, Nancy makes everyone
want CO be part of her dream."
