Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
President Penny B umenstein welcomes
Rabbi Mayer Rabinowitz, librarian of the
Jewish Theological Seminary.

Organizers "felt strongly that there
should be a tie-in with the DIA since
the museum is so important to our city
and so much a part of the lives of the
Jewish community of Detroit," said
Carolyn Greenberg. She is co-chair of
the centennial committee overseeing the
celebration of 100 years of organized
Jewish philanthropy in Detroit.
Nearly 400 art and Judaica lovers
attended the March 14 preview of
"Treasures of Jewish Cultural Heritage
-'From the Library of the Jewish
Theological Seminary" at the DIA. The
exhibit goes through June 6.
Rabbi Mayer Rabinowitz, head
librarian of the seminary, gave an
overview of the collection, which
includes two of the most important illu-
minated Hebrew manuscripts owned by
the seminary — the Rothschild Mahzor
and the Prato Haggadah.
Shown for the first time outside the
JTS Library in New York City, the col-
lection is on display during regular
museum hours in the DIA:s Schwartz
Graphic Arts Galleries. An adjunct
exhibit, "Boundaries of the Universe: A
Suite of Prints," showcases the work of
Huntington Woods artist Lynne
Avadenka.
Many related programs, including
classes, workshops and storytelling, are
included with the museum admission.
Daily guided tours are available at 1 p.m.
Co-hosts of the exhibit, along with
the DIA and the seminary, are the Jewish
Federation/United Jewish Foundation
Centennial Celebration Committee,
chaired by Michael Maddin.
