Children's Services, now the state's
largest private agency for foster care,
adoptions and child services. She
remains chair of the Gilbert Michel and
Alvin Rodecker endowment committee,
giving money for Orchards programs.
In 1967, while national president of
NCJW, Weiner helped found Home
Improvement for Preschool Youngsters
(HIPPY), a program tested in Israel as a
preparation for school readiness. The
result was the formation, in 1969, of the
Research Institute for Innovation in
Education at Hebrew University in
Jerusalem, brought to Arkansas by
Hillary Clinton, when her husband was
governor. Today, there are HIPPY pro-
grams in dozens of American states and
in Turkey and S. America.
Symington
on said Weiner's "greatest
contribution may have been while she
was president of Women in Community
Service," a national coalition of women
who work to bridge racial, religious, cul-
tural and economic gaps. Weiner wrote
the book The Stag ofIVICS.
Myrna Edgar, president of NCJW
Greater Detroit Section, calls Weiner
an amazing woman, revered by every-
one (who) never misses a meeting."
Graduating with highest honors, with
a bachelor-of-arts degree from U-M in
1933, she received a master-of-arts
degree from U-M in 1934 and a teach-
ing certificate from Wayne University in
1935. She taught 1936-40 in Detroit
and was a television writer in 1950.
Married for more than 60 years, her
husband Leonard passed away in 1998.
Her daughter Sarah Keidan is interim
dean of academic and student services at
Oakland Community College. She has
two granddaughters and three great-
grandchildren.
Weiner received the first U-M Avery
and Julie Hopwood Literary Award for
student literature, the 1966 City of
Detroit Women Who Care volunteer
award and the 1979 national Women in
Community Service Rosa Parks Award.
In 1960, she received the Key to the
City of Detroit by then Mayor Louis
Miriani and is an honorary fellow at
Hebrew University. She was founder
and president of what is now the
Women's Campaign and Education
Department of Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit. She's former vice
president of the Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan Detroit and the
Friends of the Detroit Public Library.
Says Symington: "At 86, Jo continues
her role as a leader committed to volun-
teerism, with many benefiting from her
enormous contributions. This humble,
elegant woman is a source of wisdom
and energy that we can learn from." El
