SAMMY'S CORNED BEEF 'n
Rye, on West Nine Mile in Ferndale,
was one of the most unusual delis
around ... Owner Sammy Sandler had
only 29 seats and seven counter stools,
but among the most varied menus
available . . . Items were listed on signs
hanging up all over the front wall ...
from Jewish dishes to Italian to Polish
to Mexican to steaks, etc.
NOBODY EVER DID figure out
why that big red English double-deck-
er bus was parked on the parking lot
at the Rascal House, owned by Jack
Meyers, Al Hacker and Bernie
Glieberman on 10 Mile at Southfield
roads ... But the forerunner of Golden
Mushroom sure attracted a lot of
attention with it.
IF YOU BROUGHT your own
napkin into Greenfield's Restaurant on
Woodward, it was charged to your bill.
CARL ROSENFELD, who owned
Carl's Chop House, raised prize Black
Angus steer on his farm in Dexter,
Mich. ... The restaurant's carpeting

Rosenfeld brand ... the head of a
Black Angus steer against a blue
rosette.

Maple.... its owner was Bruce

Cafe) ... and its menu concept was a
takeoff of Noodles in Toronto.
Seating 140, Confetti's usually
offered seven or eight fresh fish spe-
cialties at lunch or dinner ... It was the
farthest thing from Matt Prentice's
mind when he owned the little Deli
Unique in Oak Park ... but now called
Flying Fish, today it is one of the 14
restaurants in Matt's Unique
Restaurant Corporation.
AT ONE TIME or another, 11
Dimitri's restaurant operations were
opened by Dimitri (Jim) Syros and
sold to relatives ... His Dimitri's of
Southfield was probably the largest
and most beautiful "basement" restau-
rant anyplace ... with eating for 300 in
12,000 square feet.
ONE OF THE sections of the
menu at Down Under in downtown
Detroit's Hart Plaza, was called
"Potato Farm" ... with six different
styles of stuffed baked potatoes.
GREENBERG'S DELI at
Broadway Market sold "two cents
plain" seltzer ... but the two pennies
never saw the register ... Owners Ron
and Sandy Greenberg told folks to put
the money in the City of Hope (Mr.
