& Mrs. Group) box located on the

WHEN LADIES entered The
Benchmark gourmet restaurant at
Michigan Inn in Southfield, they were
given a rose ... Gino D'Allessio in
white tie and long-tail tuxedo strolled
with his violin and played requests of
customers ... His soundtrack of The
Godfather was in the movie and he
was also in the film's wedding scene ...
No stranger to Hollywood, Gino also
played and appeared in other films ...
like Three Coins in a Fountain.
ONE OF THOSE places that are
taken for granted while in existence
but sadly missed later was Jakks
Restaurant-Lounge on Greenfield and
Nine Mile ... To many people, it was
something of a home away from home
.. Carl Steger was at the piano for six
years, and if he didn't know the name
of the people coming in, he'd intro-
duce them anyway as being from Las
Vegas or wherever.
IF PEOPLE DIDN'T feel like
going out to a Chuck Muer restaurant,
they could pick up a complete dinner
at the new Chuck Muer Fresh Seafood
Market in West Bloomfield Plaza on
Orchard Lake Road ... The same great
chowder was cooked in a huge metal
vat ... And there were eight varieties of
frozen entrees and all that had to be
done was popping them into an oven
... The place also had oysters, crabs,
linguine, fresh fish, lobster tank, etc.
IN 1976, Joe Katz, president of the
McDonald's Michigan Operators
Association, and owner of golden arch
spots in Oak Park, Walled Lake,
Melvindale and Lincoln Park, present-
ed 1776 trees to the State of Michigan
on behalf of McDonald's ... in celebra-
don of America's 200th birthday ...
He was a former rabbi.
THE FORMER Sidney Hill men's
health club on W. Eight Mile Road,
east of Schaefer, became a new "in"
place around these parts, owned by
Richard Rollins, Gary Fried and
Sanford Shapero ... Called Cheeks, the
spacious entertainment center served
patrons from both the city and suburbs.
AFTER FRANK and Maria
Mencotti opened Maria's on W.
McNichols Road in 1949, they were
credited a year later with making the
first frozen pizza ... selling the first
order of 2,000 in 1950 to Wrigley
Super Markets ... But Frank and
Maria were more interested in opening
a second restaurant next door,
Mencotti's ... and left the frozen pizza
"fad" to fade away ... which, of course,
it never did.
