Naftaly helped the committee "pre-
sent the eruv as a community project,"
Borzak said, "resulting in Detroit
Edison's agreement to underwrite a
portion of the cost."
Two Orthodox shuls [Ohel Moed
and Young Israel-West Bloomfield] and
one Conservative synagogue [Shaarey
Zedek-B'nai Israel] are geographically
included in the eruv. Rabbi Leonardo
Bitran of Shaarey Zedek B'nai Israel
Center sees the inter-stream project
having a positive impact throughout
the eruv community.
In addition to allowing the carrying
of items, the eruv permits the use of
baby carriages and wheelchairs
because, in Jewish law, pushing an
object is equivalent to carrying it.
Ohel Moed member Dr. Noah
Levi, of the eruv committee, and his
wife Cherie are the parents of four
young children. Levi said "without the
ability to transport little kids" on
Shabbat, for many, "their community
is shrunk to the size of their house."
With its completion comes the task
of upkeep. Borzak said the eruv's final
construction cost of just under
$20,000, was paid for with communi-
ty contributions. He hopes that an
estimated $8,000 in yearly mainte-
nance and repairs will be financed
through $50 membership fees sought
from the community. Flyers have been
distributed through local mailings and
by eruv supporters.
Emphasizing the importance of
weekly inspections, Jundef remem-
bered situations where weather and a
truck caused damage to the eruv. In
one case, he noticed "ground molding
that looked odd" and realized
Ameritech had cut down one of their
own poles and unwittingly caused a
break in the eruv by reattaching its
wire to a nearby existing pole.
After three years of work, from
contacting out-of-town eruv experts to
gathering pond-water samples for
determining usable eruv area, the
community, is finally able to enjoy the
eruv's benefits, Jundef said.
The final touch in the eruv project
was the set-up of a telephone hotline
and Web site. Weekly Friday-after-
noon status updates are recorded by
committee member Dan Mendelson.
A map and descriptions of the eruv
route are among the information
Bernie Nadel regularly adds to the
Web site. (www.michiganet.com)
For Levi, the eruv offered an entirely
new opportunity With the "terrible
winter of '99," he said, "the lack of snow
shoveling did not allow for easy stroller-
pushing," so he and a neighbor bundled
up their kids this past Shabbat and
"pulled them to shul on sleds." n
To report downed lines or prob-
lems, or to make inquiries, please
call Rabbi Jundef, at (248) 737-
2626. The eruv hotline for weekly
updates is (248) 788-6782.
