Hillel Day School parents, we are
walled by your hatchet job on Yeshi-
tva Akiva ("Akiva: The Roads Ahead"
Ian. 1).
We have many friends who are
Akiva families and have seen their chil-
dren grow up and graduate from
Akiva. All of these graduates have suc-
cessfully made their transition to top
iriiversities. Equally important, these
,Akiva graduates remain committed,
lobservant Jews who blend strong Jew
ish values and secular education into
heir daily lives. That's more than
any schools, spending much more
oney, can boast.

ver since I could remember, part of
reading comprehension was to pick
out the main idea that the author
wished to convey. Normally, this is
quite easy; after all, the author wants
u to understand what it is he or she
is trying to say. However, the story
that The Jewish News ran about Yeshiv-
at Akiva made finding the main idea
difficult at best.
In fairness, the situation at Akiva is
indeed newsworthy, but the story's
slant was unnecessary. One may
indeed conclude that "rightist" Ortho-
doxy as a whole is anti-intellectual,
'intolerant and closed-minded. There-
fore, a school espousing those values
would be an unworthy steward for
educating young people.
If there is a rightist drift in Ortho-
doxy, it is primarily because schools
like Akiva succeeded in their goals.
The study quoted in the article notes
\ the importance of intense text-orient-
„171 Torah study on the high school
level as key to Jewish continuity —
maybe because the only way one can
develop a sense of being part of Jewish
continuity lies in that intense study
being only available in yeshivot.
