T
he Michigan Jewish
War Veterans and
Ladies Auxiliary, a
branch of the
National JWV, is unique in
,
many ways.
JWV was chartered by
Congress, making it the only
Jewish organization with a
direct relationship to the feder-
al government. In addition, it is
the oldest active veteran organi-
zation chartered in the United
States and it assists many more
non-Jewish than Jewish veter-
ans.
JWV was organized in 1896
by veterans of the Civil War to
counteract the anti-Semitic
comments and writings falsely
indicating that Jewish people
did not serve in the military.
That remains a primary goal to
this day.
One of JWV's major func-
tions is to service veterans in all
Michigan VA hospitals. It also
assists in the naturalization of
new citizens, helps homeless
veterans, raises funds for and
awards college scholarships
(totaling almost $500,000
worth in the past 45 years).
JWV brightens the lives of
seniors in nursing homes and
youngsters in children's homes,
lobbies for veterans and Jewish
issues in the state legislature
and Congress. It lends support
to a war veterans museum in
Washington and maintains its
own memorial home in
Southfield, paying tribute to
more than 300 local Jewish ser-
vicemen who gave their lives
for their country.
In addition, JWV supports
to all other veterans groups in
Michigan along with other
Jewish organizations in the
community and Israel.
In the coming year, it will
expand activities with the
Canadian Jewish war veterans
and the Jewish veterans from
Russia to make the organiza-
tion more international in
scope.
Since veterans as a whole are
hopefully a vanishing breed
with the decline of warfare,
JWV will encourage member-
ship of people who are not vet-
erans so that it can continue its
goals.
During the coming year, it
will work with the state gov-
ernment and other veterans
groups to expand the new
homeless veterans shelter in
downtown Detroit, which
presently houses 60 persons.
JWV will give monetary and
volunteer support with the
goal of increasing capacity to
over 100.
JWV plans to increase its
service commitment to the new
John Dingell VA Hospital in
the Detroit Medical Center.
With the recent renewed
interest in World War II as a
result of the Spielberg movie
Saving Private Ryan, JWV will
make its Southfield memorial
home more accessible to those
interested in viewing pictures
and records.
In addition to the thousands
of Jewish servicemen and
women still serving actively,
there are almost 10,000 veter-
ans in Michigan and almost
100,000 nationwide who
remain from about the 1 mil-
lion Jewish men and women
who have served in the U.S.
military since the
Revolutionary War.
For information about JWV,
call the memorial home at
(248) 559-5680.
