three weeks after failing to show up at

An off-color ad in the Aug. 19-25 edi-
tion of the Detroit Metro Times has
raised the hackles of Anti-Defamation
League/Michigan Director Don
Cohen.
The ad for Chapter 11 Sports
in Berkley, which closes Mon-
day, announced a "Final Solu-
tion Sale," and added, "Hey, if
the president can quote Hitler
and declare a 'New World
Order' without getting into
trouble, so can we."
In a fax to the sporting goods
store, Cohen demanded the

owner stop distribution of the
ad, and stated, "While I do not
make the assumption that you
have an agenda of promoting
hate, you should understand
that belittling the tragedy of the
Holocaust is in line with the
agenda of a number of such
hate groups."
Ned Silverman, 35, the Jew- E/\
ish owner of the store, took
responsibility for the ad, which
ran once, and said his intention
was not to belittle the Holo-
caust, but to make_a political
statement.
Citing Presidents Bush's and
Clinton's reference to the "New
World Order," Silverman said,
"I don't remember anybody getting up
in arms when Bush quoted Hitler, and
I'm pretty sure that Clinton quoted
Bush. The ad is about stupidity. The
ad makes a point about a president
quoting Hitler."
Referring to the ADL, Silverman
added, "My eyes were opened to the
true proportions of the futility of
organizations like the ADL."
