An off-color ad in the Aug. 19-25 edi- tion of the Detroit Metro Times has raised the hackles of Anti-Defamation League/Michigan Director Don Cohen. The ad for Chapter 11 Sports in Berkley, which closes Mon- day, announced a "Final Solu- tion Sale," and added, "Hey, if the president can quote Hitler and declare a 'New World Order' without getting into trouble, so can we." In a fax to the sporting goods store, Cohen demanded the --/ -•\ owner stop distribution of the ad, and stated, "While I do not make the assumption that you have an agenda of promoting hate, you should understand that belittling the tragedy of the Holocaust is in line with the agenda of a number of such hate groups." Ned Silverman, 35, the Jew- E/\ ish owner of the store, took responsibility for the ad, which ran once, and said his intention was not to belittle the Holo- caust, but to make_a political statement. Citing Presidents Bush's and Clinton's reference to the "New World Order," Silverman said, "I don't remember anybody getting up in arms when Bush quoted Hitler, and I'm pretty sure that Clinton quoted Bush. The ad is about stupidity. The ad makes a point about a president quoting Hitler." Referring to the ADL, Silverman added, "My eyes were opened to the true proportions of the futility of organizations like the ADL."
