education programs, Opening the
Doors sponsors an annual conference
for day school teachers, has two psy-
chologists available to do student
assessment, provides on-site work-
shops and offers resource materials
through AJE's Education Resource
Center.
"For us it's been wonderful," said
Fran Pearlman, education director of
Temple Israel, which has used its
Opening the Doors funds to hire a
part-time coordinator who oversees
the school's special education services.
Before Opening the Doors, Temple
Israel offered limited services for
learning disabled children, but
"Opening the Doors formalized that

process," said Pearlman.
She attribut e s the special educa-
tion program's success to Naftaly's
skills and the fact that it fills a need.
"There's always a reason children
misbehave, and we've found some of
that has to do with their inability to
participate in class because of acade-
mic or emotional reasons," said Pearl-
man. "Once we provide them with a
program in which they can succeed,
their behavior problems are less and
we're fulfilling a great need for Jewish
education."

Sheva Locke, former AJE director
of school services, said one reason the
program works well is because it
addresses a financial, as well as pro-
grammatic, need. "The AJE could
really be an advocate for that finan-
cial piece, whereas each school alone
couldn't approach Federation or go to
private donors," she said. "The pro-
gram we created was filling a void."
Now principal for the Hebrew Day
School of Ann Arbor, Locke staffed
the 1994 task force and supervised
Naftaly before leaving the AJE in
1997.
Opening the Doors has enjoyed
more financial autonomy and securi-
ty than other AJE programs. Accord-
ing to Randie Levin, assistant direc-
tor of Federation's planning depart-
ment, Opening the Doors is the only
AJE program for which the entire
budget is earmarked as a specific line
item by Federation.
"Opening the Doors has stayed as
a separate line item," said Safran.
"There's no risk that if there's a ,short-
fall from the Teen Mission, money
would be taken from here. Funds are
definitely earmarked and tightly con-
trolled."
