tension. Try to avoid stressful situa-
tions and control your reactions to
them.
Anticipate your child's fears -
acknowledge them and don't be
upset if she is unhappy in the begin-
ning.

Where to go.
The National Institute on Media
and the Family recommends the fol-
lowing guidelines for getting control
of your children's use of television:
• Avoid using the television as a
baby sitter.
• Know what your kids are watch-
ing.
• Watch with your kids when you
can.
• Set guidelines around when and
what your children watch.
• Turn the television off during
meals.
• Talk to your child about what
she's watching.
• Put the family on a TV diet and
schedule some fun alternative activi-
ties.
• Don't make the TV the focal
point of the room.

Don't Rush
The Wardrobe
Youth apparel is a $20 billion indus-
try that hits its peak in the fall,
when spending hits an average of
$400 per child, according to the
National Retail Federation.
But when it comes to back-to-
school planning, time really is
money. Faced with time pressure,
many parents don't make wise choic-
es based on what kids need, rather
than what strikes their fancy. Some
tips:
Evaluate what your child already
has.
Budget for basics first.
Work with a basic color to pull
together a new back-to-school
wardrobe. But don't forget a few
unusual items that will add versatili-
ty to your child's basic wardrobe.
Buy easy-care, durable clothes,
which are best for younger children.
For adolescents, spread purchases
over time. They tend to have growth
spurts.
