Knowing a second language can help
children understand written lan-
guages faster and possibly speed their
ability to read, according to research
published in the American Psycho-
logical Association's journal Develop-
mental Psychology.
It seems that bilingual preschool-
ers, as compared to monolingual
ones, can read sooner because they
grasp the symbolic relations between
letters and sounds without having
visual objects.
"Learning a foreign language at a
very young age can clearly benefit
children's reading abilities and, hope-
fully, parents and educators can help
provide the resources for this to hap-
pen," said psychologist Ellen Bial-
stok of York University.

De-Stressing
Back To School

Though many parents and children
eagerly await the "first day of
school," it can be a very stressful
time. And stress can cause
h ea d ac h es.
Of the 45 million Americans who
get chronic, recurring headaches, 90
percent are classified as tension
headaches. Some tips from the
National Headache Foundation for
avoiding and alleviating stress:
Start back-to-school shopping
early to avoid the crowds.
Ease separation anxiety by talking
about the experience with your chil-
dren ahead of time to reassure them
that the separation is only temporary
Since fatigue and erratic sleep pat-
terns are common headache triggers,
get lots of rest.
Practice your new routine ahead
of time, allotting enough time for
the morning routine.
Learn to spot signs of anxiety and

As the beginning of a new school
year approaches, parents - not just
children - need to get in the right
frame of mind. Some tips from Dr.
James Bray of Baylor College of
Medicine in Houston:
Be careful not to overpressure
your children.

Get involved in kids' homework.
Attend PTA meetings and arrange
private meetings to check on chil-
dren's progress.
Teach children social skills to help
them get along with schoolmates.
Praise your children for work
they've done well.

SCHOOLFACTS

It's the first day of school...

Whether it's kindergarten or first grade, here are
some things to keep in mind:

III Be sure your child is
up to date on vaccinations
and immunizations. Some
states require a physical.
■ Does your child have
a Social Security number
and a birth certificate?
Obtain both.
■ Does your child know
how to count? Does he/she
know letters? Teaching your
child some of these basic
can give your child a boost
Educators recommend that
preschoolers be read to regularly.
Does the school offer an
orientation? If there is one, attend it.
it Has your child ever been
away from home? If not, be sure
the child is prepared for separation.

III Does your child
have any special needs
or food
requirements? Be
sure your school
knows ahead of
time.
Young children
are both fibbers
and famously
honest, so watch
what you say about the
school or the teacher.
Check your school's
lunch policy and food programs.
a Know your child's school bus
number and write it somewhere
among your child's possessions.
1111 Have a positive attitude about
school, and your child will, too.
