Medical miracles
start with research
JEANNETTE "JEAN" ADLER, 93,
of Rochester Hills, died May 31. Mrs.
Adler was a social editor for the Huron
Daily Tribune in Bad Axe. She was a
member of the Child Study Club #2
in Bad Axe and a member of Shir Tik-
vah.
Mrs. Adler is survived by her sons
and daughter-in-law, Allan Adler of
Oxford, Arnold and Mira Adler of
Garden Grove, Calif.; grandchildren,
Phillip and Shannah Adler, Jana Dawn
and Ben Lopez; great-grandchildren,
Vanessa Marie and Brianna Nicole
Lopez; nephews and nieces, Lawrence
and Sari Biller, Milton and Sylvia Iral-
son. She was the beloved wife of the
late Abraham Adler; loving mother of
the late Robert Joseph Adler; dear sis-
ter of the late Mamie Iralson, the late
Charlotte Dreyer, the late Flora Biller
and the late Joseph Biller.
Interment at Bay City Jewish

PHILIP ATKINS, 83, of Northville,
died May 28. Mr. Atkins was a com-
mercial builder and a Jewish war vet-
eran.
He is survived by his wife, Mary
Gretchen Atkins; daughters and son-
in-law, Stephanie and Dennis Reid of
Farmington Hills, Nena Atkins of
Farmington Hills; stepchildren, Mark
and Cynthia Hayes, Susan Naylor; 11
grandchildren; brother, Jacob Atkins
of Boca Raton, Fla.; sister and broth-
er-in-law, Pearl and Julius Schwartz of
Walnut Creek, Calif.
Interment at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

CARL AUSTIN, of Farmington Hills,
died June 1. He was a graduate of
Wayne State University and the Curtis
Institute of Music. A violinist, he
played in all the major theaters in
Detroit, with the Detroit Symphony
and in recording studios. He was a
contractor of musicians for the
Masonic Temple and for recordings.
He taught violin and music theory at
Wayne State for many years. At the
time of his death, Mr. Austin was
serving his fourth term as president of
the Detroit Federations of Musicians.
He is survived by his wife, Emily
Austin; sister, Lillian Golumbia of
West Bloomfield; nieces and nephew;
great-nieces and nephews.
Interment at Beth El Memorial

RUTH BERMAN, 89, of Westland,
died May 28. Mrs. Berman was a for-
mer owner of a beauty salon.
She was the dear sister of the late
Freda Weiss, the late Ralph Rosen, the
late Sam Rosen, the late Nathan
Rosen and the late Bessie Gaines.
Interment at Clover Hill Park Ceme-

JULIUS DAVIS, 88, of Southfield,
died May 29. Mr. Davis was a lumber
sales consultant.
He is survived by his niece, Joyce
Gurman of Grosse Ile; great-nieces
and great-nephews, Terry Gurman
Smith and Stephen Smith, Mark and
Della Reiff; great-great-nephews,
Matthew and Andrew Smith.
Interment at Machpelah Cemetery.

HELEN JAFFE, of Hillsborough,
Calif., died May 25.
She is survived by her children,
Michael and Sharon Jaffe of West

and Larry Weiss, Lauren Jaffe,
Howard Jaffe, Mandy and Tracy Syers;
sister, Leah Lavine. She was the wife
of the late Harmon Jaffe; sister of the
late Edward Newman.

EVELYN KAUFMAN, 73, of Orion,
died May 30. Mrs. Kaufman was a
property management bookkeeper.
She is survived by her son and
daughter-in-law, Martin and Denise
Kaufman of Orion; grandchildren,
Shannon and Al Hernadi, Jason Kauf-'n
man; great-grandson, Jacob Hernadi;
brother and sister-in-law, Walter and
Cissy Gordon of Southfield. Mrs.
Kaufman was the beloved wife of the
late Lester Kaufman.

BONNIE JEAN GOODELL, 53, of
Denver, Colo., formerly of Birming-
ham, died April 25. She attended Uni-
versity of Michigan and taught ele-
mentary school for a number of years
in Southfield.
She is survived by her husband,
John; children, Sara and Brandon;
mother, Reva Chaitman; brother, Bill
Chaitman; mother-in-law. Contribu-

HAROLD KUTNICK, 69, of Boca
Raton, Fla., formerly of Oak Park,
died May 28. After graduation from
Central High School in Detroit in
1945, Mr. Kutnick attended Wayne
State University on a full basketball
scholarship. He received a degree in
physical education and began a 36-
year teaching career at Bagley Elemen-
tary School. In addition, Mr. Kutnick
