Gives Talk

Jewish Women
History Series

The Jewish Federation's Community
Outreach and Education Department
and the Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan will host a lunch and learn
program with historian Professor Ken-
neth Waltzer noon, Wednesday, May
13, at the Max. M. Fisher Federation
Building.
Dr. Waltzer will speak on "East
European Jews in Detroit, 1890-1920s:
Becoming Ethnic Americans." Professor
of history and director of the Center for
Interative Studies in the Arts and
Humanities at Michigan State Universi-
ty, Professor Waltzer has taught at
MSU's James Madison College for 25
years. He specializes in American immi-
grant, minority and urban history of
Jews and anti-Semitism.
Kosher luncheon will be served.
There is a fee of $10 per person.For

Seth Korelitz, candidate in Jewish His-
tory at Brandeis University, director of
the United Synagogue of Conservative
Judaism-Michigan Region and author
of several entries in the American Jewish
Historical Society's newly-published
Jewish Women in America: An Historical
Encyclopeida will teach a four-part Eilu
Eilu adult study series on four
Wednesday nights in May titled "Our
Bubbies, Our Selves: Chapters in the
History of American Jewish Women."
The series will be hosted by Hillel
Day School, 32200 Middlebelt Road,
Farmington Hills. Session dates and
topics are as follows: May 6, "Rebecca
Gratz, Pioneer Jewish Communal
Worker;" May 13, "Jewish Women in
the 19th Century American Syna-
gogue;" May 20, "American Jewish
Women as Politicians and Rebels at the
Turn of the Century-," and May 27,
"Feminism and the Lives of Jewish
Women Today."
Sessions will meet from 8 to 9 p.m.
Students may register for the entire
series ($20 for Eliu Eilu members;
$20 for others) or for individual sessions
($5 per session for Eilu Eilu mem-
bers; $7 per session for others).

Israel Birthday
Oneg Set

The Labor Zionist Family of Metropoli-
tan Detroit (Labor Zionist Alliance,
Labor Zionist Institute, Niamaat and
Habonim Dror), will celebrate Israel's
50th birthday with an Oneg Shabbat
7:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, in the Crown
Pointe building, 25900 Greendfield
Road, Oak Park.
The oneg will feature a seder using a
Haggadah designed to celebrate Yom
Ha'atzmiut, Israel Independence Day.
The public is invited. Refreshments will
be served and there is no charge.

Art Auction

Congregation Beth Shalom Men's Club
will hold an art auction 7 p.m. Sunday
May 3, at the synagogue. The preview
will be until 8 p.m. The auction will
raise funds for the new education cen-
ter. Door prizes will be given out.
A wine, cheese and hors d'oeuvres
reception is planned. Admission is $5 in
advance and $7.50 at the door. For

Class Slated
On Prayer

Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg will discuss
both the fundamentals and the mechan-
ics of prayer, as well as the mystical
foundation of the prayerbook, in a new
eight-week class, "The World of Prayer,"
11 a.m. Sundays or Thursdays, starting
April 27 or April 30, at Sara Tugman
Bais Chabad Torah Center, 5595 West
Maple Road in West Bloomfield.
