Yom Hazikaron
Ceremonies

Everyone in the community will have
an opportunity to pay tribute to those
who died defending Israel at the obser-
vance of Yom Hazikaron – Israel
Memorial Day – Wednesday, April 29.
At 11 a.m. at the Kahn Jewish Com-
munity Center in West Bloomfield, a
siren will sound and the Israeli flag will
be lowered to half-staff. Members of the
community will be invited to take part
in the memorial ceremonies, presented
by Jewish day school students. The
names of Israel's fallen soldiers will be
read by members of the community,
and flowers will be placed at the memo-
rial monument on the Center grounds.
That evening at 7:30 p.m. at Con-
gregation Shan rey Zedek in Southfield, a
traditional Yom Hazikaron memorial
ceremony will feature an address by
Major Yair Barkat, assistant defense and
armed forces attache for the Israel
Defense Forces.
Sponsoring the Yom Hazikaron
observance are the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit and its Michi-
gan/Israel Connection. The program is
coordinated with the Michigan Friends
of the IDF. The evening ceremonies will
be followed by a reception to open the
community's Israel at 50 celebration.

names of fallen Israeli soldiers, call Lau-
ren Dworkin at the Jewish Federation,

On May 3, Peter, Paul and Mary will
be joined by Israel's Chava Alberstein at
the Detroit Opera House.
A family celebration will take place
June 14, beginning with the traditional
Walk for Israel at 4:30 p.m., leaving
from the Jimmy Prentis Morris Jewish
Community Center in Oak Park. The
walk will proceed to the Detroit Zoo for
Israel Fest from 6 to 9 p.m. The Israel
Fest will feature Israeli exhibitions and
performers, music, dancing and food.
