Annual Passover Second Seder

Yom Hazikaron
Observance Set

Yom Hazikaron, Israel Memorial Day,
will be observed in the Detroit Jewish
community on Wednesday, April 29.
The solemn observance is held in
memory of soldiers who died defend-
ing Israel.
At 11 a.m. at the D. Dan and Betty
Kahn Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield, a siren will sound,
flags will be lowered to half-staff and
the community is invited to place
flowers at the memorial monument on
the Center grounds. Names of fallen
soldiers will be read until 5 p.m.
That evening at 7:30 p.m. at Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek, a traditional
Yom Hazikaron memorial ceremony -
will feature an address by Major Yair
Barkat of the Israel Defense Forces.
The Yom Hazikaron program is coor-
dinated with the Michigan friends of
the IDF. The ceremonies will be fol-
lowed by a reception to kick off the
community's Israel at 50 celebration.
Persons who wish to participate in
the reading of the names of fallen
Israeli soldiers should call Lauren
Dworkin at Federation, (248) 642-
4260.
The Yom Hazikaron program is
part of the community-wide Israel at
50 celebration. On May 3, Peter, Paul
and Mary will be joined by Israel's first
lady of song Chava Alberstein at the
Detroit Opera House. A Family cele-
bration of Israel's 50 years of state-
hood will take place June 14, begin-
ning with the traditional Walk for
Israel at 4:30 p.m., leaving from the
Jimmy Prentis Morris Jewish Commu-
nity Center. The walk will proceed to
the Detroit Zoo for Israel Fest from 6
to 9 p.m. The Israel Fest will feature
Israeli exhibitions, music, dancing and
food.

Ohr Somayach
Lunch, Learn

Ohr Somayach Detroit will feature a
pre-Passover lunch and learn with
Rabbi Eliezer Breitowitz 12:30-1:30
p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at the Max
M. Fisher Jewish Federation Building.
His topic: "Leaving the Personal
Egypt: First Steps on the Path to Spiri-
tual Growth."
Rabbi Breitowitz is a senior lecturer
at Ohr Somayach Toronto/Thornhill.

He lectures in philosophy, law, Torah
and Talmudic literature throughout
the United States.

JCCouncil
Hosts Forum

The Jewish Community Council will
host an open forum with Federation
President and Executive Vice President
Bob Naftaly and Bob Aronson 7:30
p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at the Max
M. Fisher Federation Building in
Bloomfield Hills. The two leaders will
focus on the major issues facing the
Detroit Jewish community in the
coming decade and how the Federa-
tion is planning to address them.
Moderated by Council President
Howard Wallach, the program will
allow participants the opportunity to
pose questions and offer comment.
During the program, Mr. Wallach will
also announce Council's proposed
slate of officers for 1998-99.

State Holds
Commemoration

The Michigan Jewish Conference, in
cooperation with the office of Gov.
John Engler, will host the Official
State of Michigan Holocaust Com-
memoration noon Tuesday, April 21,
in the State Capitol Building rotunda.
Theme of this year's commemora-
tion is "Children of the Holocaust -
Their Memories, Our Legacy." Gov.
Engler, state legislators and Holocaust
survivors from throughout Michigan
will attend.
Admission is free, and the public is
invited.
The Michigan Jewish Conference is
a statewide network of 14 Jewish com-
munities aimed at building and main-
taining a Jewish communal presence
in Lansing and facilitating the political
and community relations needs of its
members. In addition to the Holo-
caust commemoration, the conference
also sponsors an annual Advocacy Day
and legislative reception.
