variables of excitement, pressure or
emotional conflict. The examiner
attaches electrodes to test for blood
pressure, perspiration, respiratory rate
and pulse; the examinee may be tested
only by consent and in a comfortable
environment. If the examiner is highly
professional, the results can be 85 per-
cent to 90 percent reliable, but even
so, they are not admissible evidence in
court.
But whether a person is speaking
the truth can be examined according
to another variable — his voice.
Scientists have found that when a
person lies, the frequency of the vibra-
tions of his voice changes. (This is
true of most of us; pathological liars
whose minds don't separate between
truth and lies are exceptions.) The
amount of blood entering his larynx is
involuntarily reduced, causing the
voice to flutter: this cannot be sensed
by the human ear but only with sensi-
tive equipment.
Unlike the polygraph and previous
voice-sensitive machines, Truster "can
separate lying and covering up from
nervousness. inexactitude, physical
pain and emotional conflicts," Lieber-
man says.
"For example, insurance companies
have for years been recording customers
after a reported theft of property and
then testing their recorded voices. But
if asked whether a certain ring was
stolen, for example, the owner could be
so distressed because of its sentimental
value that the results could make her
seem to be lying, and the company
would not compensate her."
Lieberman and Segal note that
Truster has been tested on hundreds of
people under exact, scientific condi-
tions: They were told to tell a true
story, sprinkling it with a handful of
specific details that were false. In an
average of 85 percent of the tests,
Truster could identify the lies.
If a person is being examined by
microphone next to the computer,
accuracy can be boosted even more by
asking him to concentrate, looking at
his eyes to see if he's trying to distract
himself and asking specific questions.
But Truster's instruction booklet
offers two important caveats: Never
make an important decision based
solely on the results of an examina-
tion. Makhshevet will not bear any
responsibility for direct or indirect
results from use of the system.
Despite these warnings, the unique
program will have an endless variety of
uses, aside from journalists checking
the probity of politicians.
