In 1994, Inventech Investment
Company and a private U.S. investor
funneled $500,000 into the develop-
ment and Elam was founded as an
independent company. Two years later,
the pilot lines became operational and
sales began. Another placement at the
end of 1996 brought in another $3
million in investment.
It was not only investors who were
impressed by Elam's potential.
Throughout its development, Elam,
which won the Project Excellence
Award from the Ministry of Industry
and Trade in 1996 for the novelty and
competitiveness of its product,
received a stream of high-level visitors
from companies such as Timex,
Kenwood and General Electric.
As a result, when the product was
finally completed, Elam had no short-
age of orders.

complex and much of it comes from
the semi-conductor industry. It con-
sists of a copper wire which is coated
with several layers of dielectric and
semi-conductor materials which
together form a coaxial construction.
A transparent conductive layer is then
added and when electricity is applied
to the copper wire and to the outer
transparent layer, the semi-conductor
material between the two electrodes
emits light.
While electroluminescent technole0=(
gy is not new, the only other products
on the market today are flat and come
in plate form exclusively. They are
used for specialized and expensive
applications such as backlighting for
aircraft display panels. "Basically we
applied the same technology, but we
did it to a wire," says Ganor.
