What We Like

Students in Elana Adler's second-grade class at Hillel Day School
tell their favorite Jewish and everycay foods.

Elizabeth Applebaum
AppleTree Editor

Matthew Kalt,
7, of Franklin:
"My favorite Jewish
food is latkes, with
nothing on top. I
also like fish."

Rebecca
Portney, 7 1/2,
of West
Bloomfield:
"My favorite Jewish
food is latkes with
applesauce. My
mom is a really
good cook. She makes chili. It's
delicious."

Hilary
Strasberger, 7,
of Oak Park:
"My favorite food
is Jerusalem Pi77a,
but I like it plain,
with no vegetables
on top or anything.
The best thing my mom cooks is
chicken. Some of my other favorite
foods are candy and bubble gum."

Dov Smiley, 8,
of Farmington
Hills:
"I like pita — plain
pita, not cut. I like
falafel, too, but
with no lettuce and
no tomato. Well,
maybe lettuce. My mom is a'good
cook. I like her marshmallow
brownies." (Another student, over-

hearing, quickly adds, "I've tasted
his mom's brownies and they're
s00000 good.")

David DeVore,
7, of West
Bloomfield:
"Well, I like latkes
with sour cream on
them and that's
probably all.
Gefilte fish is OK,
but I do not like chicken soup and I
do not like matzah. My mom makes
brownies that have Hershey's kisses
in them, and I like them a lot. She
makes vegetables, but I don't eat
them."

Aron
Kandinov, 7, of
Farmington:
"I like latkes with
sour cream. Also I
like sufganiot. I
don't cook, but my
mom does. My
favorite things are Chinese food
and pizza."

Carly Rosen, 7,
of West
Bloomfield:
"I like matzah.
Actually, I like a
lot of things, but
not onions — defi-
nitely. Sometimes I
cook. I make soup, dinner and
lunch. I like chicken or tomato
soup. Here's how I make tomato
soup: Put some water in a bowl,
then the canned stuff, then start
boiling."

Jillian Kushner,
7 1/2, of
Farmington:
"My favorite Jewish
foods are latkes,
gefilte fish, [choco-
late] gelt and
hamantashen. I like
vegetables, too, and sometimes I
eat mushrooms, but eat onions?
No, I would not."

Michael Kuper,
7, of West
Bloomfield:
"I like haman-
tashen and matzoh
and [chocolate]
gelt and gefilte
fish. I don't cook,
but my mommy does. She makes
brownies with sugar and when I eat
them I get a sugar moustache."

Lee Winston-
Galant, 7, of
Farmington
Hills:
"My favorite Jewish
foods are kosher
macaroni and
kosher peas. I like
junk food, too, like ice cream. My
mom and dad both cook. My Mom
makes French toast with sugar."

Rebecca
Gilbert, 7 1/2,
of West
Bloomfield:
"I like sufganiot
(jelly-filled donuts),
but I don't like any-
thing inside them."

Nicole
Braverman, 7,
of West
Bloomfield:
"I like chicken
soup. Both my
mom and grand-
mother make it
with noodles and rice. Sometimes
I help them make brownies or
cookies, but I wouldn't want to be
a chef when I grow up. I want to
be a vet."

Brandon
Kappy, 7, of
Orchard Lake:
"I like matzoh
balls, which we
have every Friday
night. My mom
makes them; she's
a good cook. I don't like to cook,
but I do help with chores. I take
out the garbage, and I used to
feed my fish but they died."

Bela
Mittelman, 7,
of Oak Park:
"My favorite
Jewish food?
Usually, it would
be latkes. Yes,
those are my
favorite. I like to put cottage
cheese on them. My mom cooks
and she makes chicken. Once I
helped her make latkes, and
sometimes, but usually not, I help
her make hot chocolate."
