Obituaries

DR. SAM ALPINER, 84, of
Bloomfield Hills, died Jan. 3. Dr.
Alpiner had a general practice for over
50 years. He graduated from Wayne
State University Medical School in
1938, was on staff at North Detroit
General Hospital and was a former
chief of staff at St. Frances Hospital.
Dr. Alpiner was a major in the Army
Air Force Medical Corps during
World War II. He was a member of
the American and Michigan State
Medical Societies and the Michigan
Academy of Family Physicians. He
was affiliated with Congregation
Shaarey Zedek. His love of music led
him to play the violin in the Doctors
Orchestra in Detroit.
He is survived by his wife. Shirley
Alpiner; sons and daughters-in-law,
Marvin and Joyce Alpiner of Granger,
Ind., Robert and Dianne Alpiner of
West Bloomfield, Dr. Donald and
Susan Alpiner of Upland, Calif.,
Marc Dubin of Southfield; daughter
and son-in-law, Linda and Robert
Schwartz of West Bloomfield; grand-
children, Lisa Alpiner, Ellen and
Michael Weisman, Erin and Stacey
Schwartz, Daniel and Amanda
Alpiner, Mitchell Alpiner; great-
granddaughter, Alyssa Weisman;
brother and sister-in-law, Arnold and
Evelyn Alpiner of Sun City, Calif.;
brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Al
Moore, Sally Alpiner, Bess Alpiner.
Dr. Alpiner was the husband of the
late Belle Alpiner; the dear brother of
the late Harry Alpiner, the late
Kalman Alpiner, the late Sophie
Moore, the late Esther Schrut, the
late Betty Cheskin and the late Eva
Nelson.
Interment at. Beth El Memorial

SHIRLEY L. BEAN, 74, of West
Bloomfield, died Dec. 29. Mrs. Bean
was a member of B'nai B'rith,
Women's American ORT, Hadassah
and was an avid pan player.
She is survived by her son and
daughter-in-law, Dr. Barry and Renee
Bean of Farmington Hills; grand-
daughters, Marla, Emily and Julie
Bean; brother-in-law, I. Edward Bean.
Mrs. Bean was the beloved wife of the
late Dr. Herbert Bean; the loving
mother of the late Edward Bean.
Interment at Machpelah Cemetery.

Fla., died Jan. 2.
She is survived by her son and

ter, Faye Sarfaty of Deerfield Beach,
Fla. She was the wife of the late Dr.
Harry Berkove.

Mrs. Davis is survived by her

Stephen Smith, Mark and Della Reiff;
great-grandsons, Matthew and
Andrew Smith. She was the beloved
wife of the late Alec Davis; the loving
mother of the late Marguerite Davis.

WILLIAM "BUFF" EHRLICH, 82,
former Detroiter of Las Vegas, Nev.,
died Jan. 5.
He is survived by his brother and sis-
ter-in-law, Harry and Mary Ehrlich of
Delray Beach, Fla.; sisters, Toby Aratin
of Laguna Hills, Calif., Betty Segal of
Farmington Hills, Ethel Niskar of
Southfield. Mr. Ehrlich was the beloved
husband of the late Jessica Ehrlich.

JOANN EIZEN, 81, of Bloomfield
Hills, died Jan. 3.
She is survived by her daughters,

Sylvia O'Keefe of Livonia; six grand-
children; nine great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Eizen was the beloved wife of the
late Rubin Leonard Eizen.

was the beloved wife of the late
Samuel Goldflus; devoted sister of the
late Gertrude Beckman; dear sister-in-
law of the late Dolph Beckman.

Detroiter of Los Angeles, died Jan. 1.
He was an attorney for over 50 years.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian

Robert and Sheila Goldman of
Glencoe, Ill.; grandchildren, Rebecca
Golbert, Geoffrey Goldman, Robyn
Goldman; sister, Ann Newman of
Coconut Creek, Fla. He was the
brother of the late Max Goldman and
the late Sally Goldman.

JANET KURTZ GUSSIN, formerly
of Southfield of Laguna Hills, Calif.,

died Dec. 27. She worked as a library
assistant at Wayne State University for
10 years. She earned her bachelor of
arts degree from Oakland University
at age 60. Mrs. Gussin was a member
of Hadassah, Pioneer Women and
Jewish Parents Institute. She was also a
member of the American Jewish
Congress.
She is survived by her husband,
Isadore Gussin of Laguna Hills;
daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and
Dr. Kenneth Tucker of West
Bloomfield; son and daughter-in-law,
Dr. Gary Gussin and Susan Brown of
Iowa City; grandchildren, Sara and
Jeremy Gussin, P'ninah Stein, Lysa
and Jason Postula-Stein, David Tucker,
Laura Struble, Hadar Tucker, Patricia
Wells; great-grandchild, Rachel Nora
Tucker; sister and brother-in-law,
Merry and Albert J. Silber; brother,
Paul Katz.

SYLVIA HERKOWITZ, 74, of Oak
Park, died Jan. 1. Mrs. Herkowitz was
a William Beaumont Hospital volun-
teer.
She is survived by her sons and
daughter-in-law, Charles and Diane
Herkowitz of Southfield, Martin
Herkowitz; grandchildren, Michael,
Randy, David and Tony Herkowitz;
sisters and brothers-in-law, Nettie and
Sidney Ring, Pearl and Julius Bello.
Mrs. Herkowitz was the beloved wife
of the late Samuel Herkowitz.
