J
There's a new group of happy
campers, jaded almost from the cra-
dle, ready to enjoy fresh extrava-
gance of slime and viscera. And root
for Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) on
another deluxe tour of agony (for
top pay; she also co-produced).
The new one has long-dead
Ripley resurrected from her blood.
Now she is part alien, and (as
before) part man, part woman.
Ripley is feminism gone berserk. She
dukes out huge guys and can punch
through metal walls.
The film is set in another of those
grotesque spaceships, way out on the
far side of hell. The style is Futurist
Victorian, all thick, greasy machin-
ery lubed for death with steam,
sweat, blood, motor oil and the
glowing mucus that the aliens ooze
(or shoot in acid sprays).
Ripley nails the plot early: "She'll
breed. You'll die." The alien mother
does breed, and many die. Victims
run down corridors, away from cer-
tain death to even more certain
death. Cold from inexpressible fear,
they warm each other with attitude
lines, macho cracks that let the audi-
ence vent tension and treat the hor-
ror as a giggle. Rated R.

AMISTAD
Based on a now (again) famous
incident, the 1839 uprising on the
slave ship La Amistad, and the resul-
tant trials in American courts of its
leader, a man named Cinque, the
movie makes obvious points. Most
courtroom dramas that "go all the
way to the Supreme Court" turn
huffy-puffy, and Director Steven
Spielberg has not avoided that trap
entirely.
The climax is both inspiring and
sagging. A fine actor named Djimon
Hounsou (from Benin, West Africa)
plays Cinque, the black Spartacus.
He gives the film's commanding per-
formance while deprived of English,
though often subtitled. We see
Cinque's capture, and his leading the
revolt on the Amistad after wedging
a nail free with his bloody fingers, to
unlock his shackles.
Predictably the most upsetting
episodes show the awful Middle
Passage of the Atlantic slave trade.
There are horrible shots of naked
people packed into bilge holds, chil-
dren clutching their mothers, the
starving fighting over rations of
