pop psychology along the way, but for
the most part, Good Will Hunting has
a sharp, up-to-date air, with plenty of
"F"-words to fill up any blank spots.
The "R" rating aside, this film
would not be a bad choice for more
mature children. After all, it has its
values in the right place: It's for love
and the need to grow, and it gives a
valuable lesson about the right way of
letting go.
The movie stands or falls on the
believability of the Will character, and
Damon does a fine job combining the
traits of intellectual brilliance and defi-
ant self-protection. Unfortunately, he
is already too old for the role; Will
should be a kid who knows very little
beyond what he has absorbed in his
voracious reading. Besides, Damon,
with his carefully tousled hair, is far
too good-looking for us to tolerate the
fact that he is supposed to be a genius
as well.

Will uses his
brilliant gifts to
stymie others.

Affleck has a more self-effacing role
(as does his brother Casey, as one of
the homeboys), and he manfully
resists the temptation to dress it up a
little. He's particularly good when it
comes time to be a true friend to Will.
Williams' performance, with only
the slightest hint of his manic comic
talents in one scene about baseball, is
first-rate; given this and the sentiment
he would have going for him, we're
likely to hear more about him at
Oscar nomination time.
Damon and Affleck have made a
prodigious beginning with Good Will
Hunting. Now comes the interesting
part: Will they follow their own
lessons about growing and moving on?
Rated R.
