This Jewish organization that helps
Jews here and abroad turns its focus to
the greater local community on
Christmas Day with its Volunteer
Extravaganza. Last year 500 people vol-
unteered to visit the elderly in nursing
homes, help with handy projects with
the disadvantaged, cheered up domestic
violence shelters and served food to the
homeless and shut-ins. Families are
welcome at certain stops.

Michigan Humane Society (MHS)

People aren't the only ones in need
during the winter months. In operation
for 120 years, MHS operates three full-
service shelters and clinics in Detroit,
Westland and Rochester Hills which
care for 52,000 homeless, injured and
abandoned animals each year.
The private, non-profit organization
currently needs volunteers to provide
direct animal care in the shelters, foster
care for animals not yet able to be
adopted, clerical support and help at
special events. It also needs cash dona-
tions to keep its shelters open and
emergency vehicles on the road.

Missionaries of Charity

Located in St. Dominic Church, the
Catholic order of nuns founded by the
late Mother Teresa serves up to 300
people one meal every day at 10 a.m.
Although they do not solicit help
openly, they are always in need of food,
money and volunteers.

Orchards Children's Services

A private, non-profit, nonsectarian
child welfare agency,. the Orchards
provides therapeutic services as well as
foster care and adoptive services to
children and families in the tri-county
area.
This year, the charity needs gently
used clothing for children from birth
to age 15 for boys and girls as well as
age-appropriate toys and books.

ated.

Readings for the Blind

A local non-profit organization,
Readings for the Blind provides
recorded readings for any individual
anywhere in the country who needs
assistance with reading material.

Yad Ezra provides
kosher food to
more than
1,000 families
per month.

It currently has a shortage of equip-
ment for recording and needs cash
donations to fund new equipment.
They also are seeking reliable volun-
teers who can record reading sessions
in their own homes.
