that's left is a shell. We're taking away
a lot of things which ultimately would (
have ended up in a landfill and people
are reusing them immediately," said
Adelson.
He estimates 60 percent of his cus-
tomer base are regulars he sees every
week. These are people who have been
coming to his sales for 15 or 20 years.
Some have taken Adelson to their
(J
homes where "everything in their
house came from me. Not that they
couldn't afford anything else, they just
liked it."
Adelson strictly enforces not allow-
ing presales. "If you come into my sale
and something is marked sold, it is
because of the owners or their family.
The only time we allow someone first
crack is if they are the new owner of
the home, and even then that is only
if they specifically request it. It is
fair, and we do it as a courtesy."
Adelson is a rarity in his chosen
field — a second-generation estate liq-
uidator. His mother is Iris Kaufman z
who, for almost 40 years, has been
conducting tag sales in both the metro
Detroit area and in Palm Beach, Fla.
"She is a pioneer in the estate sale
business, and she started the whole
thing from scratch, not just in
Michigan but nationwide," said her
son. "She was tenacious enough to
create a business — Model Home
Furniture Sales — where no business
had existed before."
Indeed, as veteran tag salegoers will
recall, Adelson worked at his mother's
estate sales, as well as her former
Market Street Auction House on
Northwestern Highway before strikirc;
out on his own. Today, the two
remain friendly competitors.
Adelson is clear in making a dis-
tinction between tag sales and garage
sales. "At a garage sale, you want to -
get rid of the stuff. If it doesn't sell,
you throw it away or give it to charity.
You just want it gone.
"But at a moving sale, you don't
want to necessarily get rid of anything.
You have to get rid of it.
"An estate sale shopper is a different
